I am proud to announce that Hurricane Guitars is now a distributor of the amazing RIO GRANDE guitar pickups. These are the default pickups used in the Hurricane Texas Blackout guitars and will become the default pickups in all Hurricane guitars. Rio Grande is a locally own company that builds some the best pickups. Below is the pickups used in the Texas Blackout guitar.

This is a pickguard upgrade I did on the Hurricane Texas Blackout guitar. In this particular application
the wooden pickguard does not have any tonal benefits such as a Strat style or acoustic guitar style pickguard would have because the pickguard is suspended above the body of the guitar rather than mounted directly to the deck of the guitar. Never the less, a wooden pickguard can be cut in many shapes with many different graphics to customize the pickguard. And with this pickguard, the finish matches the body of the guitar and blends in with the look of the guitar without standing out providing a cleaner look. A coating of EMI shielding paint has been applied to the back of the pickguard but since the pickguard does not cover any electronics, the EMI paint really has no benefit other than to protect the wood of the pickguard. Still, the pickguard can be customized in a huge number of ways a plastic pickguard cannot be. Plus you are limited to what ever plastics are available. In this case, I wanted the red on black look. A sandwiched black, red, black plastic was not available.

Hurricane is a Luthier shop. The main objective of Hurricane is to design and handcraft electric guitars. The next objective is to perform the best setup and repairs possible with quality in mind.

This is a picture is of a custom wooden pickguard in which was done with the customers chosen design. The pickguard was cut from a sheet of walnut. The pickguard was finished with a grain filler, stain applied and a high gloss finish to match the clear high gloss finish of the guitar body. A coating of an EMI shielding paint was applied to the back of the pickguard to aid in reducing hum and block Electromagnetic Interference further reducing noise. The white pickups and hardware really accented the walnut pick-guard and made the guitar pop. Because a start pickguard is attached to the front deck of the guitar, there is unseen benefits to a wooden pickguard. Plastic pickguards are a denser material and has more of a dampening effect to the tone of the guitar. Wooden pickguards are a natural material that transfers the energy of the strings through the guitar along with the body of the guitar without dampening. Since the pickups not only pickup energy from the strings but also pickup energy that the strings transfer through the body of the guitar, (Much like the transfer of energy through a LP style guitar where the pickups are mounted to the body of the guitar) a wooden pickguard transfer the energy in the same way that the wood of the guitar transfers the energy enhancing the natural sound of the guitar. I had used the EMI shielding paint rather than a metallic tape for the same reasons. The metallic tape is a higher density material which also has a dampening effect where the paint is just as effective at blocking EMI but does not have a dampening effect.

Here is a picture of my first Strat pick guard which I done on my laser engraver. This pick guard was engraved on a piece of 1/8" basswood. I had started by making a SVG template file which enables the laser to cut the shape, pickup cutouts and mounting holes. Then I can add any pattern or graphics I need.

On this repair, the OHMs switch was bad. The switch would not come off of the 16 OHMS's setting. Replaced the switch with an original Peavy switch then performed a complete amp tune up which included, testing all tubes, setting the output tube bias, cleaning all electrical connections such as pots, switches, tube sockets and plugs. An amp tune up makes a huge difference in the sound and reduces buzz, squeals and hums and insures the pots don't sound scratchy.
