Marie Laveau (1801–1881) is one of the most recognized and historically documented spiritual practitioners in the United States. Living in New Orleans during the 19th century, she became known for her spiritual authority, community leadership, and deep knowledge of rootwork, healing traditions, and ritual practices. As a free Black woman of color, she held a unique and influential position in a city shaped by African, Caribbean, French, and Spanish cultural influences.

Marie Laveau was a leader of Louisiana Voodoo and is widely understood to have been a Vodou practitioner. Louisiana Voodoo developed through the blending of African spiritual traditions, Haitian influences brought by migration to New Orleans, Catholic devotional practices, and African American Hoodoo and rootwork traditions. During her lifetime, these spiritual systems often worked together rather than existing as strictly separate practices.

Laveau’s work extended far beyond ceremony. She was respected as a healer, midwife, and spiritual advisor who served people across racial and social boundaries. Many sought her guidance for protection, legal concerns, relationship matters, and spiritual cleansing. Her work demonstrated how Hoodoo and Louisiana Voodoo functioned as systems of healing, empowerment, and community care.

Her influence also highlights the historic role of Black women as spiritual leaders and protectors of community wellness. Marie Laveau helped establish New Orleans as one of the most significant centers of African American spiritual practice in the United States.

Gwo Bon Anj . When a person is born, they look out over the mirrored surface of the waters. The mirror reflects back to them the image of their metaphysical double, or soul. The Gwo Bon Anj is the immortal aspect of the soul that survives death, goes into the waters, and reincarnates into future generations. The sun provides the energy necessary for physical life on our planet. The Gwo Bon Anj supplies the energy for the spiritual life of the individual. The Manbo are Vodou’s high priestesses, who have come through the Couche’ initiation to be accepted by spirit. They have taken up their role as spiritual leaders and are equal in power, function, and authority with the Oungan. Their magical weapon, or ceremonial implement, is the serpent. Mambo is called upon to reveal lies, and cut through illusion. The mambo has the ability to isolate illusion and render it harmless. The snake is entwined around the mambos head guarding the purity and correctness of the mambo’s perceptions. In Voodoo , important spirits ride within the head . If these spirits have been corrupted by magick or harmful actions on the part of the individual, it may be necessary to symbolically remove and reset the head.
