After spending a day with the 5th and 6th grade students at Upperman Middle School, we can confidently say: Putnam County, we have some rising superstars in our midst.

All 390 students were kind and attentive, and completely captivated by our special guest, NYT bestselling author Ruta Sepetys. When it was time for Q&A, 100 hands shot into the air, each eager to ask a thoughtful question.

What a thrill it was to watch Ruta encourage our kids to become writers, investigators, and tellers of their own unique stories. What a gift to see an author we deeply admire remind them that their voices matter.

We have to shout a huge thank-you to the administrative team at Upperman Middle School for their cooperation and enthusiasm in making this event possible; to our dear friend and incredible author, Ruta Sepetys, for putting so much love and care into her time here with us; and to you- our community and neighbors at Plenty Downtown Bookshop!

And thank you to Bletchley Riddle co-author Steve Sheinkin, who couldn’t be with us but was there in spirit. What an amazing collaboration!

Because you choose to shop with us, we were able to provide a copy of The Bletchley Riddle to all 390 students. And Ruta personalized every single one. (Seriously- how amazing is that?! )

This is what books can do. They open doors to new ideas, get curious little minds whirling, and remind young people that they have stories worth telling.

We’re so grateful to be part of a community that makes moments like this possible.
