“”Be Restored To Jesus—

Very early on in ministry, I had a pastor who was in tune with me and gave me responsibility within the life of the church. He wanted me to experience ministry rather than just reading about it or being told about it. one of the first major events I oversaw was taking our students to camp. We were a small church plant, but I ended up with twice as many kids as I expected. We were all excited to see what would happen during the week. We packed the bags, loaded the vans, and made it to camp. But when I went to get us checked in, I was told that our church was not on the list. As it turns out, I had failed to hit the "Submit" button when I registered our church many months before. The camp was full, so we had to wait for over two hours as they tried to find space for us. They found us a spot, and we had a great week at camp. Luckily, my failure to register our group did not negatively affect us.

In our passage today, Peter had failed miserably. He swore he would never deny Jesus, yet he did it three times. After the resurrection, Jesus found him back where it all began: in a fishing boat. When Peter saw the Lord on the shore, he jumped into the water and swam to Him. Around a fire, Jesus asked him three times, "Do you love me?" — perhaps one for each of Peter's denials. But this wasn't shame; it was grace. Jesus was reminding Peter that love still defined their relationship more than sin ever could. We all have moments of failure. We all have those times we would rather forget. But Jesus doesn't turn His back on you. He meets you by the fire and says to you, "Amid your failure, keep following Me." We are unable to change the past, but the grace of God allows us to keep moving forward. Rest assured today that the same Jesus who called Peter also calls you.

Lord, thank You that Your grace meets me in my failures and calls me to continue following You.””

“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“”Life-Changing Prayer—

Philippians 4:6 says that it's good to bring requests to God, and we often ask Him for certain blessings or outcomes. But there are times when, in God's omniscience, He determines that a "no" would result in greater good. So what can we pray, knowing that it aligns with His will? In today's passage, Paul recorded specific petitions he made on behalf of the Colossians:

• Request to "be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding" (Col. 1:9). This is a prayer for direction and the ability to see life from God's viewpoint.

• Ask to "walk in a manner worthy of the Lord" (v. 10). The only way to grow in this is through the Spirit's work. He fills our heart with a deep longing for God and the desire to please Him.

• Pray that our life will be pleasing to Him (v. 10). It's easy to assume that making an impact for God requires something dramatic, but effectiveness in His work depends on faithfully following whatever He calls each of us to do.

Paul continually lifted up the believers in Colossae to the Father (v. 9). As we mention others by name to the Lord, we can follow the apostle's example-praying not just for circumstances to change, but for hearts to grow.

Father, help me to pray in a manner that lifts up those who are believers. Holy Spirit, guide me in pray for the souls of the lost.

“”Overcoming The World—

When my parents were serving as missionaries in Nigeria in the 1960s, they worked at the hospital in Ogbomoso. My dad was a doctor and my mom was a nurse. One day as they approached our house on their walk home from work, they spied some juju that had been put on our front porch. Juju is the Nigerian form of a pagan curse. It was a clump of dried mud, mixed with dried blood, small animal bones, feathers, dried f***s, and some African beads.

My dad recognized it from a short distance away and froze in his tracks. Not my mother. That brave lady, also knowing full well what it was, walked right up to it, lifted her foot back, and kicked it off the porch. It broke apart as it fell to the ground below in pieces. My mother looked at my dad and said, "Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. Because of the blood of Jesus Christ shed for me, I can kick juju right off my doorstep!"

My mother's confidence reflected the truth today's key verse proclaims. If we are followers of Christ, the Holy Spirit in us is far greater than any other spirit in the world.

Father, thank You for Your Holy Spirit. He is far more powerful than any other physical or spiritual force.””

“”Why Isn’t God Speaking—

The Bible speaks of times when God chose to be silent. David cried out but discerned no answer (“My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.” Psalms‬ ‭22‬:‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬). Job must have felt abandoned by the Lord (““But if I go to the east, he is not there; if I go to the west, I do not find him. When he is at work in the north, I do not see him; when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.” Job‬ ‭23‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬). And during the gap between the Old and New Testa-ments, God had no prophet for 400 years.

We don't always hear from the Lord when we expect to. He may be choosing silence because ...
• He wants our attention. God doesn't always answer in the time frame we think He should. Sometimes His silence draws our focus back to Him rather than to the answer we're hoping for.
• He's inviting us to examine our heart. When we sense distance from God, it can be an opportunity to bring unconfessed sin or resistance to Him—not because He's punishing us, but because He wants nothing to separate us from Him.
• He's teaching us to trust Him. If we're motivated to love God only when there's indication that He's listening, our relationship with Him is based on feeling rather than faith.
• He's training us to distinguish His voice from others. When God speaks softly, we listen more closely and eventually recognize His voice better.

Whatever the situation, we can be certain of this: Even in the silence, God is at work for our good.

Father, help me with my unbelief when I don’t hear the answers to my prayers. Thank You for always working in my life even when I can’t see it.

FOCAL VERSE:
God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne.

When Winston Churchill was trying to awaken the world to the N**i threat, he quoted a poem by Edwin j. Milliken: Who is in charge of the clattering train? The axles creak and the couplings strain; and the pace is hot, and the points are near, and Sleep has deadened the driver's ear."

When we look at our world today, we're apt to wonder who's in charge of this clattering train. Wars raging. Morality collapsing. Infections spreading. Weapons proliferating. Economies falter-ing. Hearts failing. Is anyone in control?

We can rest assured that however chaotic things appear on earth, God is still in charge, ruling and overruling, moving this world toward its preappointed end. The Bible declares,
"The Lord is in control.... Yours is the mighty power and glory and victory and majesty. Everything in the heavens and earth is Yours, O Lord.... We adore You as being in control of every-thing" (1 Kings 20:13, CEB; 1 Chronicles 29:11, TLB).
Regardless of the headlines we read or the heartaches we feel, we can rest assured that the Lord is our stability and peace.

“”Our Helper in Prayer—

The Holy Spirit is a part of the Trinity-one with the Father and Son, omnipotent and omni-scient. He knows exactly what God's will for our life is. So it's wise to depend on His guidance, especially in prayer
(“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26).

Even the most intelligent people operate with limited knowledge. We don't know what the future holds, and our desires may not fit God's plan. That's why prayer isn't just talking to God-it's an opportunity to align our heart with His. The Holy Spirit directs our prayers, impresses truth upon us regarding what we have asked, and ultimately opens our mind to God's will.

There are believers who give up on prayer because our human limitations prevent fully understanding how it works. But stepping away from communication with God means missing out on the Spirit's remarkable work on our behalf. And we never have to worry about praying the "wrong" thing If we ask for something outside the Father's will, the Spirit intercedes and asks for what is right.

When God's will is our true desire, we'll find ourselves increasingly sensitive to the Holy Spirit's guidance. He is our connection to the Father in prayer, and because He leads, we can always follow with confidence.””

Father, thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to council me as I my pray, may Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

“”An Ever-Present Helper—

Have you ever wished you could reach God directly—anytime, anywhere? The good news is that through the Holy Spirit, you can do exactly that.

Even the disciples couldn't live successfully without divine aid. That is why the Lord insisted the men wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit to come before they began sharing their faith. Jesus told them, "It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you" (John 16:7). While Jesus walked the earth, His physical presence was limited to one place at a time. Now, however, God's help is readily available through the Holy Spirit, who indwells all believers and is constantly present with each one.

Thanks to the Spirit, Christians can become the people God designed them to be. Through the Helper's knowledge and power, we can be devoted Christ-followers.
The Spirit's work includes opening our minds to God's truth, providing strength beyond our own, and comforting us during heartache.

Our heavenly Father loves people so much that He provided an ever-present Helper to all who place their faith in Jesus.
Whatever we face today, the Holy Spirit is with us—ready to guide, strengthen, and comfort.””

Holy Spirit, thank You for Your never ending guidance through this journey called life. Give me strength to hold fast to God’s Truth.

“”When You Know, You Know—

In today's passage, verses 15-17 remind us that this world will pass away. That is why John cautions us not to love the world or the things of the world.

Yet that instruction can be hard to follow sometimes. In autumn, as stores are beginning to gear up for Christmas, pretty new items are on display to buy. I have to admit, 1 am tempted to love the things of this world and hope that one or two of them show up in a box under my Christmas tree.

In contrast to the world and all its pleasures passing away, the "one who does the will of God remains forever" (v. 17, CSB). John reminds us that those who know Christ and His Word are able to overcome temptations. Only God and the things of God are eternal and what really matter.

Many of the world's rich will stand before God one day and discover they are not rich after all. Conversely, those poor in spirit are actually far richer than one can imagine.
As Jesus promised, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs" (Matt. 5:3, CSB).

Father, may I be grateful for what You have given to me. Make me desire what pleases You and obey Your will.””

“”Get Rid Of The Weeds In Your Life—

I don*t know about you, but I really enjoy cutting grass. There is just something about finishing your yard and seeing the immediate results of the work you just put in. It brings me a type of enjoyment and satisfaction. There is one part of yard work, however, that I have never enjoyed and probably never will: pulling weeds! But it must be done because weeds can overtake your yard. If you don't regularly pull them out or treat them with chemicals, you'll end up with even more weeds.

As I was spraying my yard and pulling weeds recently, I thought about the Christian life. Much like the weeds in our yard, our hearts are the same way. In order to grow and flourish as a Christian, we constantly have to put bad things away. Something has to go so that something better can come in. In James 1, the brother of Jesus talks about this very thing. The Christian life is a daily surrender of the sin in our hearts. James challenges us to constantly eliminate sin and negativity — what he refers to as moral filth and evil — and replace it with the Word. When we actively put away sin in our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit, we allow the Word of God to take root in our heart and soul. Then, the healing power of God begins to happen and we become more like Jesus. Men, we all have weeds in our hearts.
Some have taken deeper root than others and will require more time to remove, but some are smaller and can be killed quickly. Nonetheless, they are there and require action on our part. But it is a day-by-day process. Thankfully, eliminating the weeds doesn't just depend on us and our power. As we surrender to the Spirit, He helps us do the work of removing the weeds.

Lord, show me the things I need to eliminate in my life so I can replace them with Your truth.””

“”Eternal Truths—

First John was written to the early Christians who faced a crisis of faith because of Gnostic beliefs. John's teachings reinforce the enduring truth of God despite the spiritual darkness that threatens to overshadow it.

Today is the first day of October. This month will bring colder temperatures and shorter days. Each new day will have less hours of sunlight than the previous one. Autumn is a beautiful time of year where I live with colorful autumn foliage showing off on every tree and bush. Although I love its beauty, I'm not a fan of the shrinking number of sunlight hours per day the season brings.

Today's passage portrays a different kind of light and darkness. The light and darkness spoken of in verses 5-7 is of a spiritual nature. It indicates that a person can choose to live in spiritual light or spiritual darkness. In order to walk in the light of God, we must admit our sins, confess them to God, and ask for forgiveness. The Word of Life, "which was from the beginning," who John writes about, is the eternal and true Son of God - Jesus Christ.

Father, thank You for the Word of Life and for providing the way by which I can walk in spiritual light with You.””
