I know litter•LESS isn’t the only place you can buy soap, laundry products, shampoo and the other things we use every day. We have big-box stores and online shopping. We have plenty of choices.
But most of us are going to buy these things somewhere anyway. And where we choose to buy them has an effect.
When someone refills at litter•LESS, it helps me keep those refills available here, restock what people are actually using, bring in things customers ask for and continue building a local option that didn’t exist here before. And the same thing is true for so many businesses around us.
We can say we want bakeries, restaurants, coffee shops, farm stands, makers and interesting little stores in our towns, but liking the idea of having them isn’t enough to keep them here. They need people to actually use them.
That doesn’t mean buying everything locally. Sometimes the big store makes sense. Sometimes ordering online makes sense. But when a local business already has something you need, choosing it sometimes helps make sure that choice is still available the next time.
The kind of town we have is shaped, in part, by where we choose to spend.
