"Of course... I'm all ears. What's on your mind?"

I included that exact response in The Compton Shuffle when recalling a real conversation I had with a student in my office. It wasn't just something to say in the moment; it is the philosophy I try to lead with and how I want to show up for the people in my life.

Sometimes the best breather you can take is simply getting whatever you are carrying off your chest. The timeline and the daily grind can get heavy, so today I just want to hit pause and check in on my own community.

How is everyone holding up this week? Whether you need to vent, share a quick win, or just drop an emoji to let me know where your head is at, the floor is yours. I'm all ears. 👇

Long before the transatlantic slave trade, Africa was home to rich and sophisticated intellectual traditions spanning the continent. From the scholarship of ancient Egypt and Nubia to the philosophical traditions of Timbuktu, the intellectual centers of West Africa, the knowledge systems of Ethiopia, and the scientific, agricultural, architectural, and medical traditions found throughout the continent, Africans were producers and preservers of knowledge—not merely subjects of history.

Africa did not enter history through slavery. Africa had intellectual histories long before Europeans entered the continent.

If we want to see real change in our neighborhoods, we have to be intentional about where we guide our youth.

In The Compton Shuffle, I introduce the concept of the HEAL Sectors. HEAL stands for Health, Education, Administration, and Literacy. These are not just jobs. These are the foundational pillars of any strong, thriving community.

When we mentor our young people to pursue careers in these specific fields, we are doing more than helping them secure a paycheck. We are placing them in the exact rooms where policy is made, where health outcomes are decided, and where the next generation is educated. We are giving them the tools to heal their communities from the inside out.

We need our brightest minds becoming doctors, school principals, public administrators, and authors. We have to show them that true power lies in building up the people around them.

Which of the HEAL sectors do you think needs the most focus in our communities right now? Let us know in the comments below. 👇🏾

When does a child stop being viewed as a child?

For Black boys, that transition happens far too early. In The Compton Shuffle, I break down the devastating impact of adultification. This is a systemic bias where society and law enforcement view Black youth as older, larger, and more threatening than they really are.

When a child is perceived through a lens of inherent threat, standard de-escalation tactics are completely thrown out the window. This distorted view leads directly to over-surveillance in our neighborhoods, frequent police stops, and tragic, unnecessary violence against young people who should simply be allowed to grow up.

We have to challenge these dangerous perceptions head on and demand that our systems recognize and protect the innocence of our youth.

How can we as a community better protect our young men from being over-surveilled and misunderstood? Share your thoughts below. 👇---------------+

We spend a lot of time discussing the risks our youth face, but we also need to celebrate one of the most powerful solutions available to us. The impact of a present father is immeasurable.

In The Compton Shuffle, I highlight how a dedicated father figure acts as a protective shield against negative outside influences. When a father or strong male mentor is actively involved, we see higher graduation rates, stronger emotional security, and a massive drop in vulnerability to gang recruitment. A present father provides the anchor that keeps a young person grounded when the streets try to pull them in.

We must do everything in our power to support, uplift, and celebrate the fathers who are in the trenches doing the work every single day. Their presence is literally saving lives.

Homework battles most often mean a tired, overloaded brain, not a teenager who does not care.

When they stall, their resources have usually run out in that moment, and pressure only tips them further into shutdown. Lowering your voice, offering just the first step rather than the whole task, and setting a short visible timer can help them switch back on.

Connection before correction, every time.

When bullied Part 2

We cannot expect our students to succeed if we refuse to give them the tools to do so.

When I became the principal at Compton High, I discovered that the computers meant for our ninth graders had been sitting in a district storage room for over two years. Our teachers were trying to teach computer literacy by pointing to pictures in textbooks. On top of that, the band program hadn't seen new instruments or uniforms in a quarter of a century.

This kind of systemic neglect breeds hopelessness. When schools are stripped of basic resources and extracurricular activities, students lose their motivation to learn, making them incredibly vulnerable to the desperate choices offered by the streets.

We fought back and secured a $5 million grant to get those computers and instruments onto our campus. But basic educational funding shouldn't require a miracle—it should be the standard.

📖 Learn more about the fight for our schools and actionable steps for community reform in my memoir, The Compton Shuffle. Link in the bio.
