On a day in which we should be celebrating Miles Davis’s 100th birthday, we are unfortunately reeling in the news of the passing of the great Walter Theodore “Sonny” Rollins.

Undoubtedly one of the absolute giants of jazz and one of the greatest tenor sax players to ever pick up the horn.

One of my favorite stories about Sonny is that he stepped away from music at the peak of his career and spent years practicing alone on the Williamsburg Bridge because he felt he could still get better. Practicing and bussing on that bridge so to push past his current boundries was the kind of dedication says everything about who he was.

From extremely successful albums like Saxophone Colossus, his iconic classics such as St. Thomas, Oleo, and Tenor Madness, his dedication to his craft on that bridge - his music influenced generations and will keep doing so for a long time.

Rest easy, Sonny. Thanks for the music.
