The Arizona Copper Art Museum has opened yet another branch in the Verde Valley. With a full-functioning art collection in Clarkdale and a 20-year-old gift shop in Jerome, the museum added a gift shop in Old Town Cottonwood.

“This shop has opened up here for the museum. It’s like a secondary shop,” owner Nicole Basham said. “By opening up here, this shop will assist in business for the museum. What we want to do is send tourists, once they are done shopping and eating in Old Town, to the museum in Clarkdale.”

Basham said other than a few bracelets and earrings at the front desk of the museum, guests aren’t able to purchase anything there. Once guests are done exploring the museum, they are encouraged to visit the Jerome or Cottonwood gift shops.

“The gift shop in Jerome has been there for the past 20 years. That shop really has everything,” Basham said. “The shop in Cottonwood has a wide variety of items and is more of an overflow of more items that we were unable to store in Jerome.”

With only two employees including Basham, she said the new location has been doing great.

“The whole region is here because of copper,” Basham said. “We are taking that history of copper and making it a store that people can shop in and purchase items from.”

Basham’s father, director, and founding member of the Arizona Copper Art Museum Drake Meinke, said there are even more expansions than just the Cottonwood location coming.

At the beginning of September, Meinke attended a Historic Preservation Commission meeting to discuss the preservation of buildings in the Town of Clarkdale, one of those buildings being across the street from the museum.

“We are going to be working on that and updating that building in the future,” Meinke said. “I attended the meeting just to tell everyone how we are going to proceed and the steps that it will take to get that building converted from its empty state of four years to a museum exhibit.”

In the past, the space has been used for retail. Now, Meinke has plans to set up a copper display that will run across the entire 105 showcase window.

“The display is only going to display things that are made out of the material or the color copper,” Meinke said. “When guests walk past the window of that building, you will see copper dresses and hats on mannequins, copper-colored shoes, anything you can imagine. It sets a new attraction in the state of Arizona.”

Meinke said, for now, the items in the showcase display won’t be for sale.

“This essentially will be an expansion of our current museum but with a fashion display theme,” Meinke said. “Anything that you would see on display in Scottsdale or New York City, you can see in the windows of Clarkdale, with the exception that everything is made of copper.”

Meinke said the project will begin in March of 2024 with an estimated completion of the end of 2024. The new space across the street from the museum will be called Venus Tree at the Arizona Copper Art Museum.

Once the window display is complete, Meinke said they will revisit the idea of expanding inside the actual building behind the window.

Copper around Jerome, Arizona has especially ancient geology

The Verde Mining District grew to become one of the greatest copper producers in Arizona from 1883 to 1992. Two primary mines produced more than 99% of the district's copper production: The United Verde and the United Verde Extension, also known as UVX.

The district, located on the northeastern slope of the Black Hills (Mingus Mountain), has an intricate geologic history dating back 1.74 billion years. Its abundant mineralization was formed by metal rich black smokers, classified as hydrothermal vent chimneys, along the seafloor.

This is in contrast to many of Arizona’s copper deposits to the south, which are classified as porphyry copper molybdenum deposits, formed less than 180 million years ago by hydrothermal fluids originating from an underlying magma reservoir.

The volcanic massive sulfide deposits of the Verde Mining district are described as small, compact and exceedingly rich ore bodies compared to the large, low-grade disseminated qualities of the porphyry copper molybdenum deposits.

The Verde Mining district grew to become one of the greatest copper producers in Arizona from 1883 until 1992.
