The Coudersport Ice Mine was accidentally discovered in 1894 by Billy O'Neil while he was using a divining rod to try and locate a silver mine which was thought to be somewhere in Ice mountain. O'Neil started digging, he found layers of ice, not silver. In time, the digging cont

Ice begins to form in April and is usually melted by October. Edwin Swift Balch has described the Ice Mine as a true "glaciere naturelle" or natural refrigerator. He states that even though the Coudersport Ice Mine is small, it is the most impressive one known in the eastern United States.

WELCOME THE STEFANIK FAMILY

It's been a very busy week at the Coudersport Ice Mine with a lot of star gazers in our region. Our ice is going through its seasonal melt, but we still had an internal temperature of 31 degrees today. High temperature in Coudersport reached the low 80s.

This afternoon we were fortunate to have the Stefanik Family from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. A young lady in their group was celebrating her 15th birthday today.

On behalf of everyone at the Coudersport Ice Mine, we'd like to wish you a Happy Birthday!

ICE MINE ICE, AUGUST 3, 2026

Last week we had a piece of ice from the deck melt, fall, and block part of our live feed camera view from the bottom of the mine.

This morning we dropped in a ladder and removed that piece of ice.

These ice and frost pictures were taken today from the bottom of the mine.

ICE MINE WELCOMES CELEBRITY - Sweden Valley, July 30, 2026

The Coudersport Ice Mine welcomed celebrity Jenn Egolf from Mertztown, Pennsylvania earlier today. Ms. Egolf and her entourage from Emmaus visited the Ice Mine and celebrated the one year anniversary of her dropping her cell phone into the mine during the 2025 season. (The only recorded instance of such an occurrence.)

As part of an Ice Mine visit and photoshoot last summer, the cellular device slipped from her hand and fell into the icy depths of the mine. Fortunately, members of the Ice Mine Search & Rescue Team (IMSRT) successfully deployed the John Dodd Aluminum Pole (JDAP) and retrieved and returned the device to the owner. Philadelphia ABC Action News 6 was able to get drone footage of the trapped cell phone that day.

Ms. Egolf was proud to report that her T-Mobile coverage continued during the time of the cell phone entrapment and she was able to get all of her messages that same evening.

Ice Mine staff are looking forward to her 2027 visit and will have a table set up for fans seeking autographs and to allow for private pictures with her.

Thank you Jenn. You guys were a blast today.

REPOSTED FROM GINNY AND LARRY KIO

"We played “tourists “ in our hometown of Coudersport, PA— after having moved away more than 20 years ago.

We visited the Coudersport Ice Mine and were pleased to have Kensie Majot, a member of our family, as our guide! Kensie did a wonderful job explaining the history and facts about the Ice Mine!

Thanks for a wonderful tour, Ginny and Larry Kio"

Ice Mine Note: The Coudersport Ice Mine has a longstanding tradition of working with local high school students who present to our guests the history and science of the Ice Mine.

We are very lucky to work with Kensey Majot, Jayden Widmeier, and Steffi Buchsen during the 2026 season.

ALL 50 STATES! THANK YOU!

The Coudersport Ice Mine has had visitors from all 50 states this season. We were able to pick up the Dakotas, Arkansas, and Oregon over the past week.

We have also had guests from 26 countries so far this season.

The warm summer rains have melted much of the top ice over the past month, opening up a view underneath the platform. Strangely, and like in other years, ice will only grow on certain rocks in the deepest part of the mine. Some of the rocks continue to grow icicles, others just have frost, and some are dry.

This is a picture taken this morning below the viewing platform.

You can get another great look from the camera on our website.

The internal temperature of the mine has stayed between 31.3 and 31.6 degrees all summer. The current temperature in the mine is 31.5 degrees.

Thank you to all of our visitors and followers.

COUDERSPORT ICE MINE WEEK 7

Thank you to everyone who visited this past weekend. We had over 1,000 visitors during the July 4 holiday.

Despite a week of 90+ degree temperatures, we continue to see ice growth inside of the mine as it has remained sub freezing through out the late spring and early summer.

To date, the Ice Mine has had guests from 44 of the 50 US states. Hoping to see guests from Oregon, Arkansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Alaska before we close for the season.

This morning we welcomed a young student from Helsinki, Finland bringing our international visitor country count to 18.

We will be open again Wednesday morning at 10:00am.
