There are evenings when you put on a record and listen casually. Then there are those rare moments when the room disappears, time seems to stop and the musicians are suddenly present before you.

Those are the moments we pursue.

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Michael Fremer at his home. We had an absolute blast listening to records—and then listening to even more records!

Michael has tremendous knowledge and passion, but what stays with me most is his pure JOY for vinyl. When he lowers the stylus onto a record, his excitement is contagious. You are not simply evaluating a pressing or listening to a piece of equipment. You are sharing in the discovery of the performance and everything hidden within those grooves.

During my visit, Michael played a first pressing of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. I have heard this legendary recording many times, but this experience was different. The presence of the musicians, the air within the recording and the emotional connection to the performance made it a moment I will never forget.

Michael owned and used the CH Precision P1 as his reference phono stage for many years. He has now continued his analog journey with CH Precision’s flagship P10 Reference Phono Preamplifier.

WHY THE CH PRECISION P1 IS IN MY OWN SYSTEM

I personally own a CH Precision P1 with an X1 External Power Supply in my reference system.

I did not choose the P1 simply because we represent CH Precision. I chose it because of what it allows me to experience from my own records.

The P1 does not exaggerate the music or impose an obvious sonic personality. Instead, it preserves the natural tone, texture, timing and spatial information captured in the grooves.

A voice takes on body, warmth and presence. A piano has weight, scale and harmonic richness. Cymbals shimmer and decay naturally into the room. Instruments occupy believable positions within the soundstage, while quiet musical details emerge from an exceptionally silent background.

The P1 allows dynamics to rise without strain and delicate passages to unfold without losing their beauty. Most importantly, it does not turn vinyl into a technical exercise. It draws you into the performance and reminds you why you began collecting records in the first place.

Short of the flagship CH Precision P10, I believe the P1 is one of the most accurate, revealing and musically complete phono preamplifiers available today.

Great records have never been easier to collect. The P1 exists to let you hear what makes those records great.

DESIGNED AROUND THE DELICATE PHONO SIGNAL

A phono cartridge produces an incredibly fragile signal. Preserving that signal requires exceptional engineering, extremely low noise and meticulous attention to every stage of the audio path.

The stereo P1 is a fully balanced, dual-channel phono preamplifier built around a dual-monaural architecture. Its left and right audio channels are independently constructed and isolated within a single chassis, providing superb channel separation, remarkably low noise and a beautifully open, dimensional soundstage.

Engineered entirely in-house by CH Precision, the P1 captures the smallest textures, spatial cues and dynamic contrasts without diminishing the natural flow of the music.

CUSTOMIZED FOR YOUR CARTRIDGE

A truly reference phono stage must do more than deliver accuracy. It must adapt to the cartridge, tonearm and turntable being used.

The P1 can accommodate as many as three phono inputs, allowing serious vinyl enthusiasts to connect multiple tonearms or turntables. Each input can be configured independently.

The P1 offers:

• Two current-sensing inputs for compatible low-output, low-impedance moving-coil cartridges
• One voltage-sensing MM/MC input with exceptionally precise gain and loading adjustments
• Independent configuration for multiple cartridges and tonearms
• Intelligent Gain and Loading Wizards through CH Control
• Optional historical EQ curves for EMI, Columbia, Decca and Teldec recordings

The current-sensing inputs are especially compelling with compatible low-impedance moving-coil cartridges. They eliminate the conventional process of selecting a cartridge-loading impedance while delivering outstanding speed, openness, dynamic expression and an exceptionally low noise floor.

For cartridges that perform best through a conventional voltage input, the P1 provides extremely fine adjustment of gain and loading. This allows the phono stage to be optimized for the cartridge instead of forcing the cartridge to work within a limited selection of fixed settings.

Whether you enjoy treasured vintage pressings, modern audiophile releases or several turntables and cartridges, the P1 adapts to your collection with extraordinary precision.

THE P1 AND X1—A BEAUTIFUL PATH FORWARD

The single-chassis stereo P1 is already an exceptional phono preamplifier, but CH Precision gives its owners a meaningful path to even greater performance.

Adding the X1 External Power Supply takes the P1 considerably further. By relocating critical power-supply functions into a separate chassis, the X1 helps isolate the P1’s sensitive analog circuitry from residual electrical noise and magnetic interference.

In my own system, adding the X1 brought greater silence, dimensionality and natural ease. Fine textures became clearer. The space around musicians expanded. The entire presentation gained stability and emotional flow without becoming analytical or forced.

The system can grow even further. A second P1 creates a true-monaural configuration, with one chassis dedicated to each audio channel. Adding a second X1 completes the ultimate four-box P1 system.

That is one of the qualities I admire most about CH Precision. You do not have to purchase the ultimate configuration on the first day. You can begin with the wonderful stereo P1 and allow it to evolve alongside your analog system.
