A Downtown Transformation Worth Celebrating

Take a look at the difference at 113 W Court Square in Historic Downtown Covington!

Through the Downtown Improvement Grant provided through the Tennessee Main Street Program, this downtown property received improvements that helped transform its appearance while giving new life to an existing building.

Why does this matter?

When we invest in our downtown buildings, the impact reaches beyond a single storefront. Improvements like these help preserve our downtown, support local businesses, encourage additional private investment, and create a district that people want to visit, shop, dine, and spend time in.

The transformation at 113 W Court Square is a great example of what can happen when property investment and downtown revitalization work together.

Before: A storefront in need of new life.

After: A bright, welcoming space that adds character and energy to Historic Downtown Covington.

Projects like this are an important part of Covington Main Street's work to strengthen our downtown one property at a time.

Mornings with Main Street is taking a walk this month!

Sometimes the best way to understand what our downtown needs is to get outside and take a closer look.

For this session, we will walk Historic Downtown Covington together and evaluate everything we see. From buildings and storefronts to sidewalks, public spaces, streetscape, signage, and the overall experience of being downtown, we are going to look at our district with fresh eyes.

Using Community Evaluation forms, we will score our observations and then learn how to combine what we see with statistical data and observation surveys to better identify needs, opportunities, and priorities for our downtown.

This is not just a walk around the block. It is a chance to see our downtown from a different perspective, have meaningful conversations, and learn how good information can help us make better decisions for the future of Historic Downtown Covington.
Come ready to participate, share your perspective, and maybe notice a few things you have walked past a hundred times without really seeing.

And most importantly, wear comfortable shoes. We are in putting some steps on September 28th! We will meet at Crafted Coffee at 9:00am.

What an incredible use of space when preserving this building! This is what Main Street programs are all about…Preservation of our historic downtowns!

The skates disappeared.

But the floor could still bring the whole town together.

This concept asks a surprisingly practical question:

What if an abandoned roller rink became a PUBLIC LIBRARY without erasing the architecture people remember?

A traditional skating rink already has something many public buildings need: one enormous open floor, long sightlines, a clear circulation loop and large shared spaces under a single roof.

Instead of destroying that geometry, the library could USE it.

The original oval skating path becomes a continuous ring of curved bookshelves and study areas.

That circular layout could create something unusual for a library: a natural walking route through different collections without forcing visitors into a maze of narrow corridors.

The center of the old rink could become a lowered reading forum for classes, children's programs, talks and community events.

Even the smaller pieces of the building already have logical second lives.

The skate-rental counter becomes circulation and checkout.

The DJ booth becomes an enclosed tutoring or recording room.

The perimeter railing becomes a continuous study counter.

Former party rooms could support literacy programs, homework help and community classes.

And there is one piece I would NOT remove:

THE WOOD FLOOR.

Instead of covering every trace of the rink, sections of the original skating surface could be repaired and preserved beneath the new library.

You could literally read a book where generations of families once skated.

A real conversion would still require major work—fire protection, accessibility, acoustics, HVAC, daylight control, structural assessment and modern electrical infrastructure.

But that is the point of adaptive reuse.

Not pretending the old building never existed.

Giving the parts that made it memorable a completely different job.

The rink once brought people together for recreation.

Its second life could bring them together for learning.

If your childhood roller rink closed tomorrow, would you rather see it become a LIBRARY—or preserve it as a ROLLER RINK?

☀️ FOOD, FAMILY & FUN NIGHTS UPDATE ☀️

Due to the extreme heat and humidity, we have made the difficult decision to CANCEL our final Food, Family & Fun Night in the Depot District.

The safety and comfort of our families, animals, food truck operator, and volunteers comes first. With the excessive heat, we feel this is the best decision for everyone.

❤️ THANK YOU to everyone who came out this summer, grabbed dinner from our food truck, played games, enjoyed the animals, brought the family, and helped make our first Main Street Food, Family & Fun Nights such a wonderful community gathering!

We appreciate every vendor, volunteer, downtown business, and visitor who helped make these evenings possible.

Stay cool, Covington, and watch for more Main Street fun to come! ☀️
