Pretty Flora Petunias are a compact, multiflora-type of petunia developed to hold a neat, tidy, and mounded shape. Unlike traditional petunias that often become "leggy" or split open late in the season, this series naturally branches tight and stays low to the ground without requiring growth regulators. The grow to a height of 7-10" and produce dense clusters of mid-sized blooms that rise directly above the foliage.

Pretty Flora is naturally resistant to common fungal issues like gray mold. These annuals thrive in full sun in garden borders, mass landscapes, and patio containers. They offer a long flowering season from early fall through winter in mild climates being able to take temperatures into the high 20 degrees.

They come in a wide palette of colors. The entire series is bred to bloom uniformly at the same time which means gardeners can easily design balanced, high-impact color displays. With basic care consisting of regular watering and bi-weekly feeding, they provide a reliable, low-maintenance splash of color all season long.

Kale - love it or hate it - it's good for you! Two types of kale that are popular in restaurant menus are Toscano and Prism. Toscano Kale is an heirloom variety and Prism Kale is a curly leaf compact F1 hybrid. They differ in their growth habit, leaf texture, and taste.

Toscano kale is a historic Italian variety with a tall, upright structure and blistered leaves. It features striking, prehistoric-looking deep blue-green foliage that tastes exceptionally sweet and mild, especially after a frost. Toscano’s thick, blistered strap leaves require longer cooking or heavy massaging and is best for braising, sautéing, stewing, and baking into chips. It's hearty leaves stand up to the saute or stew pan without breaking down too much.

Prism kale is an award-winning option bred specifically for compact, high-yielding containers and small-space gardens. Prism kale grows with an almost stemless shape, packing dense, nutty-flavored curly greens onto miniature plants that re-leaf remarkably fast after harvesting. Prism’s tender, tightly ruffled leaves are built for quick cooking and raw salads like the kale ceasar salads you find on restaurant menus. Prism needs much less massaging to use raw than Toscano and can be served with a light toss of dressing.

A short lesson cabbages... There are 3 main types of cabbage that are grown in our area —green, red and Napa—each with unique textures and best uses in the kitchen.

Green Cabbage: This is the most common variety with tight, smooth, pale green or white leaves. It has a peppery crunch when raw and turns sweet when cooked. Best for coleslaw, salads, stir-fries, and sauerkraut.
We recommend: Primo Vantage and Stonehead.

Red (Purple) Cabbage: Similar in shape and dense texture to green cabbage, but with deep purple or reddish leaves. It has an earthy taste and holds its crunch well. Best for pickling, slaws, and braising.
We recommend: Ruby Perfection F1

Napa Cabbage (Chinese Cabbage): Features an elongated shape, pale white stems, and ruffled yellow-green leaves. It is very tender with a sweet, mild flavor. Best for raw salads, dumplings, kimchi, and brothy soups. Grows very quickly compared to green and red cabbages.

Mustard greens come in several varieties, ranging from mild and sweet to sharp and spicy. Three types that are delicious and grow well in our area are:

Florida Broadleaf Mustard Greens are a very productive Southern heirloom variety known for their rapid growth, massive smooth leaves and classic peppery flavor. This is a versatile variety and is milder than heavily curled mustards when harvested young, making it an excellent choice for both fresh salads and traditional Southern braises.

Mizuna Miz America is a hybrid red mustard known for its intense deep-burgundy foliage and mild, peppery flavor. Unlike many other red mustards that lose their color in the heat or as they grow, Miz America maintains a uniform, dark red color on both sides of the leaf from its baby stage all the way to maturity.

Red Giant Mustard is a fast-growing leafy green celebrated for its maroon-to-purple leaves and a bold, peppery flavor profile resembling horseradish. Originating from Asia, this cool-season heirloom is both high-yielding and highly ornamental making it both a delicious and beautiful addition to gardens and containers.

Continuing with our fall vegetable lessons...let's discuss Cauliflower. There are hundreds of types of cauliflower in existence; however, in South Louisiana and Mississippi two types stand out as being very reliable producers -- Snow Crown and Flame Star.

Snow Crown cauliflower is considered one of the easiest, most dependable varieties to grow. This F1 hybrid is highly praised by home gardeners and commercial growers alike for its quick growth, uniform performance, and excellent flavor. It was awarded the prestigious All-America Selections (AAS) winner title in 1975. It produces beautiful, fully-domed, tight white heads that grow 7-8" across and weigh about 1-2 pounds. Snow Crown is mild and sweet without bitter notes, making it perfect for eating raw on veggie trays, roasting, steaming, or mashing. It matures quickly, typically ready to harvest in 50-65 days from transplanting.

Flame Star cauliflower is a hybrid variety celebrated for its distinctive pastel-orange color, exceptional heat tolerance, and rich, buttery flavor. It is packed with beta-carotene (Vitamin A), it is favored by home gardeners and market growers alike because it handles environmental stresses much better than older orange varieties. Flame Star produces smooth, dense, 7" heads with a beautiful pastel-orange or semi-orange hue. It has a sweet, rich, and creamy bite with no harsh bitterness or spice. Unlike some colorful vegetables, Flame Star retains its orange color beautifully when roasted, baked, or boiled. The orange coloration comes from high levels of beta-carotene, making it a highly nutritious choice for cool-season gardens.

Last week we discussed fall vegetable planting. However, southern gardeners can now also plant a crop of cucumbers and squash, which most people consider a spring/summer offering. Our warmer (okay, hot) days lend themselves to producing spring/summer vegetables in the fall season as long as they don't take too long. Cucumbers and squash produce fairly quickly giving you time to harvest a nice crop. We recommend Burpless Cucumber and Straightneck Yellow Squash for our area. They can be planted in pots or in the garden with equal success. And, at this time of the year, they can even benefit by getting a bit of shade in the afternoons so you don't even have to have a completely sunny garden to grow them.

It's time to start your Fall Vegetable Garden! Unlike the flexible windows of spring, timing is key to fall gardening success. Because winter brings shorter, cooler days, vegetables take longer to mature. To give your crops the best chance, you must start your "fall" garden in the heat of our late Louisiana summer. Fortunately, in a warm climate like south Louisiana, the milder winter season extends our growing window.

Prepping the Garden: Summer heat can bake the soil and summer rains deplete the soil of nutrients. Clear out any expired summer crops, turn the soil over, add new organic soil/compost and an all purposed fertilizer to the beds. Mulch the beds with about 2" of organic mulch such as crushed pine straw.

Some of the top vegetables for the fall season include:
-- Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Bell Peppers and Squash - planting them early in the fall (Aug & Sept) will give you time to get a nice yield of tasty vegetables before frost.
-- Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celery, Collards, Kale, Mustard Greens, Bunching Onions, Pak Choi and Swiss Chard. All of these vegetables can be planted now throughout the fall season.
-- Lettuce and Spinach. These can be planted when the night temperatures cool off a bit.

Confetti Syngonium is a easy to care for patio and houseplant known for its arrow-shaped green leaves splashed with unique pink spots. Place Confetti in indirect light which keeps the pink speckles bright and clear. Confetti is also loves high humidity which makes it perfect for covered outdoor patios. This is a plant that can live all year long as it can be placed indoors or outdoors with equal success.

For garden mums, not to be confused with "pot" mums, it is best to plant them in your garden or in pots before they bloom. This will help develop the root system before the plant sets bloom allowing the plant to properly support the massive amount of blooms that this variety produces. Plant them in at least 6 hours of direct sunlight in a porous soil that is well drained.

Some colors in this series include: Apple C***r, Homerun Orange, Lively Pink Bicolor, Elated Purple, Cherry Red, Bliss White and Ditto Yellow.

Serena Angelonia is a LSU Super Plant. It is a continuous-blooming series of Angelonia. Commonly called "summer snapdragon", it is highly prized for its low-maintenance care, low water use (after established), and ability to thrive in extreme heat and humidity. It rarely needs to be deadheaded although it will benefit from some snips on occasion. The color of the blooms come in white, purple, lavender, rose, and blue. Serena's grow compactly, typically reaching 12-18" tall and 12-14" wide. Plant them in full sun and well-drained soil. They are generally deer and rabbit resistant and are natural pollinators attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.
