As we celebrate 70 years of Ramble House, we’re also celebrating another special milestone—50 years of Shane Birdsey being part of the store.

Shane first walked through the doors of Ramble House in 1976 as a 12-year-old looking for a job. Alton asked him why he wanted to work there, and Shane replied, “I want to learn as much as I can about fly fishing.” Alton hired him, and Shane spent every summer at Ramble House until leaving for what was then Mesa State College. He continued helping at the store through college before beginning a career with the Colorado Division of Wildlife and later working as a water quality specialist at the Summitville Gold Mine.

Susan had spent her summers in Creede since the day she was born. She and Shane met here, fell in love, and were married in 1991. That same year, Susan officially joined the Ramble House family.

In 1993, Shane and Susan became partners with the Coles, and in 1996 they proudly took over ownership of Ramble House. That same year, they established Creede Guide & Outfitters, expanding the business to include guided trips on the Rio Grande.

Today, 50 years after Shane first walked through the door, Ramble House remains a family business built around the same things that have always mattered most: relationships, community, and a love for this place.

We’re incredibly thankful for everyone who has supported Ramble House and the Birdsey family over the years. Whether you’ve been coming through our doors for decades or just discovered us recently, thank you for being part of our story and allowing our family to be part of yours.

Although the flows are low and the temperatures have been warm, we have had a great couple of weeks fishing the area's still water. Chironomids and balanced leaches have been our flies of choice. Road Canyon Reservoir has been a favorite with many fish over 16 inches being caught.

Voluntary fishing restrictions are officially in place on the Rio Grande and the South Fork of the Rio starting today, July 15th.
We ask that everyone honors these restrictions. There are plenty of lakes and higher elevation creeks that are still fishing well! Give us a call or stop by with questions.

Our 2026 float season is officially over. Thanks to all of our clients who were able to make it happen with such a shortened season. There is still some great fishing to be had on the Rio in the mornings and of course the high country is in full swing.

Absolutely epic dry fly day on the Upper Rio. Big browns chasing drakes in shallow water is a best case scenario type of day.

As we celebrate 70 years of the Ramble House, it's important to remember the people who started it all.

Alton and Virginia Cole moved to Creede from Arkansas after meeting and falling in love while teaching in American-Japanese internment camps during World War II. Both were passionate lifelong educators. Alton went on to serve as superintendent of Creede schools, while Virginia taught English.

Alton was an avid photographer and the "Alton Cole Collection" collected by the Creede Historical Society contains a irreplaceble historical record of Creede and the mines that ran here for so long.

In June 1956, they opened the Ramble House. For decades, Alton shared his love of the outdoors, teaching thousands of people to fly cast out back, while Virginia traced the fish cutouts that still line our walls today.

The name Ramble House came from the idea of a place where people could "ramble"—to wander and discover something along the way. Alton and Virginia wanted everyone to feel welcome, not just the hardcore fisherman. Seventy years later, we still strive to carry on that vision.

This June marks 70 years of Ramble House.

Over the past seven decades, the Ramble House has taken many forms, but its mission has remained the same: helping people enjoy and appreciate the incredible outdoors that surround Creede.

We're excited to celebrate this milestone by sharing stories, photos, and interesting history from both the Ramble House and the town of Creede throughout the summer. So follow along for that. We also have a special line of 70 year anniversary apparel that we will debut right around the 4th of July.

We couldn't have done it without the generations of customers, locals, and visitors who have supported us along the way. Thank you for being part of our story.

Here's to 70 years—and the next 70 to come.
