📚💗 Celebrating the Life & Legacy of Dolly Parton 💗📚
The world lost an extraordinary woman this week, but Dolly Parton leaves behind something that will continue changing lives for generations.
Most people knew Dolly for her unmistakable voice, her songs, her humor, and that larger-than-life personality. But those of us who believe in the power of books will also remember her as one of the greatest champions of childhood literacy.
In 1995, Dolly created Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library with a simple but powerful idea: put books into the hands of children.
What began in her hometown in Tennessee grew into a worldwide program that has delivered more than 300 million books to children — completely free to the families receiving them.
That is an incredible legacy.
At Gulf Coast Media Bookstore, we see every week what happens when a child finds a book they love. A book can create curiosity. It can build confidence. It can give a child somewhere to escape, something to dream about, or even an entirely new way to imagine their future.
Dolly understood that.
Her music will continue to be played for generations, but somewhere tonight, a parent will open a book with a child because Dolly Parton believed that child deserved one.
We can't think of a better way for a life to continue touching the world.
