Forgot to mention this some time ago, but I definitely recommend reading Across Five Aprils. It deals with being a kid living in the Civil War. The author was inspired by stories have grandfather told her. It can be a bit challenging to read due to the vernacular and dialect of the characters but worth the time. It's a good history refresher.
