Another Mermaid Throne update! The painting is DONE! And after spending entirely too much time staring at it and finding one more little spot I wanted to touch up 😂 I think I can finally put the paintbrush down…
If you’ve been following this project from the beginning, the entire throne was built over a PVC and plastic mesh armature and then hand sculpted using Smooth-On Inc.. Free Form™ Habitat™ Black. From there I carved in all of the brick and stonework, added the coral pieces, sculpted barnacles and other details, and finally painted everything by hand.
Now I need to protect all of that work before it eventually goes underwater!
For that, I’m using Smooth-On’s Tarbender™ Clear Epoxy Coating to seal the painted surface and give the entire piece a protective clear coating.
I’m doing two coats, which sounded simple enough until I remembered just how many bricks, cracks, corals, barnacles and weird little places I created on this thing. 🤣
So… more mixing, more brushing, more sticky gloves and, of course, more patience.
It’s kind of crazy looking at it now and remembering that this thing started as a pile of PVC pipe in my workshop. There have definitely been a few moments during this build where I’ve wondered what I got myself into, but I’ve had so much fun creating it.
Two coats of Tarbender™ and some curing time stand between me and finally getting this thing where it belongs… UNDERWATER!
You could say that I got a little carried away with this project 😂
