🐦 Help Save Migrating Birds: Turn Off Your Exterior Lights at Night 🌙

Did you know that millions of birds migrate across North America every fall, traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles under the cover of darkness?

Many migratory birds navigate using natural light from the moon, stars, and the Earth's magnetic field. Unfortunately, bright outdoor lighting from homes, businesses, and cities can confuse them, causing birds to become disoriented, exhausted, or even collide with buildings and windows.

💡 One simple action can make a big difference: Turn off unnecessary exterior lights at night during migration season.

By reducing light pollution, you can help migrating birds:
✅ Stay on their natural flight paths
✅ Avoid dangerous collisions with buildings and windows
✅ Conserve valuable energy needed for their long journeys
✅ Reach breeding and wintering grounds safely

When Should Lights Be Turned Off?

Peak migration occurs:

The most important time is from dusk until dawn, especially on cloudy or foggy nights when birds fly lower and artificial lights become even more disorienting.

Other Ways to Help Birds During Migration

• Close blinds or curtains when indoor lights are on at night.

As summer comes to a close, now is the perfect time to prepare your yard for fall and winter wildlife. Small changes today can make a big difference for the birds, pollinators, and beneficial creatures that share our neighborhoods.

✅ Adjust outdoor lighting
Install motion sensors, shielded fixtures, or bird-friendly bulbs to reduce light pollution and help migrating birds safely navigate the night sky.

✅ Replace invasive plants with natives
Native plants provide the food, shelter, and nesting materials that local wildlife depend on. Fall is one of the best times to remove invasive species and add native trees, shrubs, and perennials.

✅ Clean and prepare your birdbath
Give your birdbath a thorough cleaning and start thinking about winter water sources. Birds need reliable access to fresh water year-round, especially when natural sources freeze.

🐦 Want to Witness One of Nature's Coolest Survival Strategies?

Put out some peanuts. In the shell or out of the shell!

Seriously!! Every fall, birds across Virginia begin preparing for winter. Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, and Blue Jays don't just eat the food they find. Many hide it for later. Scientists call this behavior "caching." Some birds can remember hundreds or even thousands of hiding places!

One of the best foods to encourage this fascinating behavior is peanuts. Blue Jays will often grab a peanut in the shell and fly off to stash it somewhere safe. Chickadees and nuthatches prefer shelled peanuts that fit easily into their tiny beaks.
