What local flowers look like ✨
If you’ve recently inquired with us, you had to check a little box to acknowledge that we are now using only local flowers for all events.
This means our wedding season is shorter, only taking weddings from mid April- to mid October.
It took me a year to finally make this decision because I kept going back and forth. Of course, if you signed with us before this went into effect (August 15th) and you wanted flowers that we can’t get locally, we will uphold that.
I made this decision mainly due to the environmental impact imported flowers have and the possible health risks they pose to those who handle them.
Imported flowers are often grown in very controlled environments and sprayed with chemicals to keep them perfect. They then travel thousands of miles to get to the floral warehouses. Then we design with them and let’s be honest, we never wear gloves like we should.
It was kind of ironic to me that I was using these pesticide covered flowers but yet we never use any pesticides in our own garden. We also buy as much local and organic produce as possible trying to avoid these chemicals, and yet I was working with these flowers. So I came to the decision to no longer use them.
My style has truly evolved into a natural and organic design form and local flowers fit perfectly into that. They lend themselves into a more freeform design and never once have I had to wire a local ranunculus for it to not snap in a bouquet!
Buying local flowers not only supports local flower farmers but also is a more sustainable option. Imported flowers are often wrapped in plastic and when you buy the amounts one needs for a wedding, there is so much plastic! When I pick up from local farms, I use buckets that I have used 100 times already.
Is it easier to just order wholesale? Maybe. But the flowers farmers I work with continually go out of their way to help me find what I need. I have loved building relationships with farmers across 5 counties in VA!
