Good morning! Now as cooler weather nears, it is time to start thinking of Autumn/Winter wellness.
🌿 MAKE YOUR OWN ELDERBERRY SYRUP 🌿
We have the essentials waiting for you at The Apothecary:
🫐 Dried elderberries
🍯 Raw, local wildflower honey from Brightside Farm
A very important elderberry reminder: always use properly identified, fully ripe dried elderberries—and dried elderberries must still be thoroughly cooked before consuming.
Drying does not remove every naturally occurring cyanide-producing compound. Never eat dried elderberries straight from the bag, and never use elderberry leaves, stems or unripe berries in your syrup.
A simple method:
1 part dried elderberries
4 parts water
Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for at least 30 minutes, until the liquid has reduced by approximately half. Strain thoroughly and discard the berries. Allow the liquid to cool until warm—not hot—then stir in raw local wildflower honey to taste.
Pour into a clean jar and refrigerate immediately. Homemade elderberry syrup is perishable and is not shelf-stable.
⚠️ Never give honey or products containing honey to a child under 12 months.
✨ Prefer to leave the simmering to us? Fresh elderberry syrup is also available by special order. Message us or stop by The Apothecary to place your order.
