This is one of the worst washers ever sold by any company, and it is still being sold today.

This is a GE top load washer, GTW680BMM0WS. There are other similar GE models sold but the basic design is the same. They are popular due to their very low cost.

So what is wrong with it?

It would be better to state what is not wrong with it. It has such a poor reputation that our techs nicknamed it, "The Ship of Theseus".

The parable of the Ship of Theseus goes like this: Over the centuries the famous ship of Theseus was repaired over and over by replacing rotten planks with new ones. After all the original planks were replaced, was it still the same ship?

At their first company that did warranty work, one of our technicians replaced every single component in this washer except for the body.

The shift actuator, speed sensor, gearcase, and belt are prone to failure. Worse still, for many repairs, the gearcase must be separated from the tub. Over time, corrosion along the gearcase shaft and tub makes separating them impossible. The entire tub would therefore need to be replaced as an assembly, with some costing as much as over $800.

The damper rods that suspend the tub are prone to wearing out resulting in the tub shaking out of control. In this case, the dampers were worn out after only 3 years.

The pressure hose that measures the water level is prone to separating from the tub resulting in leaks and "H2O SUPPLY" errors.

The plastic that makes up the console is cheap and is prone to cracking where the screws are inserted.

There is also a laundry centre version that uses the same components for the washer as this model with all of the same issues.

This washer is somehow worse than Samsung washers, and that's saying something.

Please don't be fooled by its low price. Spend $200 more and get a basic LG top load instead.
