These recent events are thought provoking and elicit strong emotions. Many are enraged, feeling a sense of dissolution, fatigued over the never-ending events, and still others are terrified. I have felt each one of these emotions repeatedly since I was a boy in the 1960s.

What’s one way we together could start to make a difference? I saw a quote a few days ago that I thought was powerful. What if we all started by saying:

“I see your color and I honor you. I value your input. I will be educated about your lived experiences. I will work against the racism that harms you. You are beautiful. Tell me how to do better.”

It’s a statement we can all learn from because ignorance reaches far and wide-everywhere!

What if we tweaked the quote by changing a couple words… for example, change the word “color” to gender, creed, religion, age, generation, ethnic background or other descriptors. Substitute the word “racism” with bias, ignorance, mean-spirited words, intolerance, elitism, privilege or other words. Wonder what would happen if we all thought in those terms?

Point is we all have to think differently. It only takes a sprinkling of goodness by a few to change the awful discourse of ignorance. That sprinkle could lead to a deluge which in turn builds momentum like a tsunami washing away every ignorance in it’s path.

I'm pleased and encouraged by all the new "likes" to this page - now over 4,700 and growing each day simply through word of mouth. This interest in my writings is astounding to me and I'm more than humbled by it. The lesson you have taught me is that stories of faith, courage, miracles and love of family are powerful and have a way of speaking to people's souls. I am happy and thankful the real life experiences described in "Daddy Did You Hear That Bird?" and "Never Better" have inspired so many people across the globe - so much so - that they have been prompted to tell friends and family about the positive messages. Thank you for that special gift! I wish you all peace, kindness and goodwill.

Sadly this past weekend marked the passing of Muhammad Ali -a hero of mine dating back to my childhood in the 1960s. Like many Black children in those days I followed Ali closely. Watching his boxing matches and fight for freedom and equality outside of the ring was a family affair.

In 2000 I learned firsthand about having your tongue stilled due to a strange illness. Legionnaire's Disease slurred my speech and threatened to change my life completely just as Parkinson's Disease did to Ali. The twinkle and mischief in his eyes let others know his mind was still sharp and strong. I did my best to convey the same message until slowly but surely - one syllable at a time- I began to speak again. Even though Ali's speech gently waned into a peaceable quietness his life and very presence spoke volumes.

Although the stinging pronouncements could no longer be uttered he still made beautiful fluttering through simple yet profound poetry by simply waving his hand, nodding his head, and smiling. Most importantly he carried on works that will bring change follow him for an eternity.

Muhammad, this past weekend you took your place in heaven and will now float like a butterfly and sting like a bee for all eternity...

My heart, prayers and thoughts go out to the families and victims of the recent outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease in New York. Ironically next week marks the 15th anniversary of my surviving Legionnaires. I am so fortunate and blessed to not only be a survivor of this terrible disease but also now living a full life fueled by faith, determination and God's grace and favor. I hope that my story shared in "Never Better" will encourage the survivors and their families.
