Why Turnout Gear Seam Construction Matters!!

How does seam construction impact turnout gear quality and performance?

Stitches per inch (SPI) play an important role in turnout gear durability. Globe Turnout Gear garments are constructed with 8–10 SPI, compared with some competitors that average 6–8 SPI. In-house laboratory testing has shown that higher stitch density consistently delivers greater seam strength. With some lightweight outer shell fabrics, the fabric itself can tear before the seam fails—a sign that the seam is stronger than the material it holds together.

More stitches per inch create stronger, longer-lasting seams that better withstand the demands of the fireground. Globe also follows strict construction methods for structural seams. If a thread breaks or a bobbin runs out during sewing, the entire row of stitching is replaced rather than repaired or restarted. Structural seams are joined only where stitching begins or ends.

Higher stitches per inch and no joined structural seams are two examples of Globe's commitment to quality construction, helping maximize seam strength, durability, and long-term garment performance.

Crystal Fire Company is excited to announce we have received a donation grant from Pennsylvania Skill. This donation allowed the CFC to upgrade some of our most used tools. Mercedes Textile and The Fire Store provided FFD with this banner to signify the Department’s upgraded supply and attack hose packages. The transition will continue when the rescue engine is delivered and our firefighters load the hose into its bed. The attack package also includes replacement of the nozzles with Elkhart XD nozzles.
