Beyond the License: What Will Your Cannabis Business Bring to the Community?

Over the last 13 years, we have met with officials from more than 150 municipalities across the country to discuss cannabis businesses and their potential impact on local communities. Some meetings have gone extremely well, and others, not so much. But every meeting has taught me something valuable.

For the past several months, we have been meeting with officials from various Virginia towns and cities across the state about cannabis licensing. Just like officials in other cannabis-friendly states, they often ask the same important question:

“How will a cannabis business add value to our community?”

The answer must go beyond jobs and tax revenue. A responsible cannabis business can revitalize vacant properties, support local organizations, create career opportunities, strengthen relationships with law enforcement, invest in public safety, and become a trusted community partner. However, local approval isn't just about having a good business plan. Cannabis business owners must clearly communicate their value, address community concerns, and demonstrate that they are prepared to operate safely and responsibly.

That is where experience matters.

Sapphire Risk Advisory Group helps cannabis license applicants prepare for and present to local officials. We understand the questions officials are likely to ask, the concerns they need addressed, and how applicants can clearly explain the long-term value their business will bring to the community.

The Word Is “Great”

Great conferences. Great hotels. Great dinners. Great after-parties. Great meetings with clients, partners, and vendors, and even a great baseball game. And I got to wear my great sneakers !!!

Very rarely do they all happen in one weekend. Actually, in just 30 hours. I thoroughly enjoyed the Lucky Leaf Expo in Richmond, Virginia, this past weekend.

Since March, Sapphire Risk Advisory Group has been working with prospective Virginia cannabis license applicants and existing businesses preparing to transition into this exciting new industry.

For me, the greatest value of attending the conference was gaining a better understanding of where Virginia’s cannabis market is heading, and how Sapphire can help our clients pursue their licenses, open their businesses, and achieve their dreams.

I’ll be back in Richmond on October 22, co-hosting a Virginia Cannabis Licensing Happy Hour. By then, we should have a much clearer understanding of the regulations and licensing application process.

Virginia’s Current Anticipated Timeline:
• September 2026: Draft regulations released
• December 2026: Regulations finalized
• January 2027: Regulations published and effective
• By February 1, 2027: Applications begin opening for certain license types
• By May 1, 2027: Certain initial licenses issued
• July 1, 2027: Retail cannabis sales begin

These are exciting, and dare I say, GREAT—times in the Old Dominion. 😊

The Value of a Tchotchke

First, what exactly is a tchotchke? A tchotchke—pronounced CHOTCH-kee—is a small trinket, knickknack, giveaway, freebie, or piece of promotional swag. It usually has little practical or financial value, but it may have tremendous sentimental or marketing value.

Over the past 13 years, Sapphire Risk Advisory Group and Sapphire Blue Sky Ventures have handed out plenty of tchotchkes—including yo-yos, Rubik’s Cubes, whistles, air fresheners, and more.

But one item continues to wrap up the competition: our Sapphire blanket.

It has stood the test of time and remains the number-one requested item among our clients, partners, and friends at conferences and expos. Apparently, people may forget your sales pitch, but they will never forget who kept them warm in an over-air-conditioned convention center!

So, is there an ROI on promotional items?

We believe there is. The right tchotchke keeps your company’s name in someone’s home, office, car, or, in our case, on their couch for years. Sometimes the best marketing tool is not the most expensive or high-tech. It is simply the one people actually want to keep and use.

August 19, 2026 – The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) has filed a new formal complaint against the adult-use license of Fire Farm, LLC dba Crave Cannabis (License No. AU-R-000656) located at 1100 S. Monroe St., Monroe, Michigan, 48161.

“…At 3:57 p.m., three individuals exit the back receiving area of the business with six boxes of blue Metrc tagged ma*****na packages and one black bag with unknown contents. No observation of a receipt or any cash/money exchange was made…”

The CRA is authorized under the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Ma*****na Act (MRTMA) to investigate alleged violations of the respective acts and the administrative rules promulgated thereunder, take disciplinary action to prevent such violations, and impose fines and other sanctions against applicants and licensees that violate the MRTMA or the corresponding administrative rules.
The CRA gives notice of its intent to impose fines and/or other sanctions against the license of Fire Farm, LLC dba Crave Cannabis, which may include the suspension, revocation, restriction, and/or refusal to renew the license of Fire Farm, LLC dba Crave Cannabis. Statements in formal complaints are merely allegations.

In the cannabis industry, very few things seem powerful enough to overcome politics.
