Did you know that during the African slave trade, trade beads were used to barter for people? That means jewelry was actually used to oppress instead of bring joy, as it does today. A central part of NB Makes artwork is reflecting on this truth and taking opportunities to embed joy and intention into every jewelry event. 🖤❤️💛💚

In honor of Juneteenth, Beads of Hope is a community-based jewelry-making experience hosted by NB Makes, designed to educate all participants on the impact of trade beads in Black history and celebrate hope and freedom. This event is presented in partnership with the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture and in collaboration with Make Space, featuring activities from fellow Black makers Mosaic Maker's Collective.

The artistic community mourns and remembers the hundreds of thousands of LGBTQIA+ people we lost in the AIDS epidemic, and to acts of hate & violence since. ❤️🩹

Artists & makers who were robbed of the opportunity to create & share their lives with us. We want to take a moment to honor and remember them.

“Unfinished Painting” by Keith Haring, seen above, is a well known piece that exemplifies the art that could-have-been. One of Haring’s final pieces before he lost his life to AIDS, this piece speaks for all the artists whose voices were silenced and left incomplete. Many of whom were young and should still be here today, they deserved to live a long life full of creating.

As a collective of 150+ local artists and makers, we at Mosaic Makers Co are so grateful for the opportunity to create freely, love out loud, and do so in reverent gratitude, knowing what a privilege it is. Happy Pride, Y’all 🌈💞

Meet the Maker, Ellen Orchard! Ellen specializes in hand-carved block prints and paper goods. Inspired by local landscapes, and everyday small moments that often get overlooked, Ellen creates artwork that celebrates simplicity, texture, and the beauty of the handmade.

Each linocut print starts as an original drawing before being carefully carved into linoleum and printed by hand. Because of this process, subtle variations in ink and texture make every piece uniquely its own. Ellen is drawn to block printing for its tactile nature and the element of surprise that comes with each pull from the press. Even from the same block, no two prints are exactly alike, and that’s part of the magic. ✨

Emanuela is an illustrator with pride in her Latina heritage and a focus on sustainability! Each Emavillalbaj piece is thoughtfully crafted with a focus on conscious production, avoiding mass manufacturing and instead, offering meaningful items that carry a story. Her art is her way of sharing with the world the story of her identity, values, and creativity! 🩷

Photo courtesy of Katy Sensenig Schilthuis. A new coworking space and workshop studio is set to open June 15 on North Marsalis Avenue. Make Space is a 2,750-square-foot venue designed to serve as a “third place” for Dallas creatives. As
