Underground wine cellars have a massive advantage: stable, cool temperatures naturally. Then most designers ignore that advantage and oversize their cooling systems anyway.
A cellar built into a cave in a hillside has inherently different thermal properties than a room above ground. Storm shelters converted to wine storage have earth-stabilized temperatures that stay consistent year-round. That's not a side benefit. That's critical design information.
Ignore it and you end up with oversized equipment. That creates problems just as serious as undersized equipment.
→ Undersized: can't maintain temperature, can't manage humidity.
→ Oversized: equipment cycles improperly, humidity fluctuates, system doesn't stabilize.
→ Both scenarios: your wine experiences stress.
US Cellar accounts for the actual environment before sizing any system. Is this a cave cellar with earth-stabilized temperature? Adjust accordingly. Is this a basement conversion with natural cool advantages? Factor that in. Is this an above-ground room with full sun exposure? Different calculation entirely.
The equipment selection only works when it matches the actual environment you're cooling.
Understanding your site conditions isn't optional design consideration. It's foundational. Get it wrong and you have expensive equipment that doesn't perform properly until someone adjusts it.
