Bill Kennedy’s photographs of the Texas Prison Rodeo document the annual event for inmates of the Texas Prison System, located in Huntsville, Texas. Marshall Lee Simmons, the general manager of the prison system, started the rodeo in 1931. The rodeo raised money for recreational and educational programs for inmates. Eventually, outside funding to those programs from the federal government, along with structural issues in the arena, led the prison rodeo to end in 1986.
Bill’s photographs were made between 1971 and 1981. Visit PDNB Gallery to view these photographs and more from our current exhibition, The Last Cowboy Song. We are open until 5pm today!

Light is a Plastic Medium: The Photography of Carlotta Corpron
October 16, 2026 - March 24, 2027
Opening Reception: This Friday, October 16th from 5:30 - 8:30 PM

Light Is a Plastic Medium: The Photography of Carlotta Corpron is a survey of work by the American abstract photographer and educator whose investigations into the poetics of light and form and innovative use of technology supported the establishment of photography as fine art. Highlighting her biography and artistic achievements, the exhibition will position Corpron (1901–1988) in the artistic vanguard through six bodies of photography that she made in Texas from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. The exhibition showcases 48 recent gifts by Herbert Lust to the Hirshhorn, as well as additional loans from his collection.

The opening reception is this Friday, October 16th from 5:30 – 8:30 PM.
@ 6 pm: Curator Tour: Betsy Johnson, Hirshhorn Associate Curator

Seeing Together: Photography through Language and the Senses
A conversation between photographer / filmmaker Neal Slavin and artist / author M. Leona Godin

Neal Slavin and M. Leona Godin will explore the phenomenon of synesthesia, where the boundaries among the senses dissolve and the languages of music, poetry, painting, and photography intermingle. Together, they will discuss how perception moves beyond eyesight alone, and how photography continues to expand our understanding of what it means to see.
