(1)

The short answer is that Plaid Elephant Books is a youth-focused bookstore. It’s a dream brought lovingly to life. It’s a place for wonder and delight and discovery. As I was dreaming Plaid Elephant Books into existence, three words inspired me. I hope that they inspire you, too! DELIGHT – There is something wonderful about discovering a new book with a child. If we are lucky, our children will re

ad throughout their lives because they love it. Because every new book is an adventure, filled with new friends and incredible discoveries. We have curated a selection of top-quality titles – from board books to young adult – that will delight readers of all ages and stages. PLAY – Plaid Elephant Books isn’t just about books. We also stock toys, games, puzzles, and art supplies. Children learn through play. They have instinctively creative minds and wonderfully imaginative hearts. As supportive adults, our job is to nurture that inherent spark. CONNECTION – Children thrive on connection. Not just with their family, friends, and classmates – but with places, too. We carry memories of treasured places with us into adulthood and those connections shape us in powerful ways. From our location in historic downtown Danville, to the whimsical wall art, to the kid-friendly furnishings, Plaid Elephant Books is designed for children to love. Plaid Elephant Books is a dream many years in the making. I can’t wait to share it with you.

According to their babysitter, these sweet sisters had been talking about "The Underwearwolf" by Gideon Sterer nonstop for two weeks - ever since we featured that title during our Silly Stories Storytime in July.

It must be said that we did some pretty impressive wolf howls together during that storytime. Plus, it's a book about underwear. What's not to love?

It was ultimately decided that they needed a household copy. (And a book about fairies. Because one can never have too many fairies.)

If you're looking for a very fun and silly read-aloud story, "The Underwearwolf" will not let you down!

Thursday, August 20th is the Danville Author Hop! Whether you're looking for a cozy mystery, gripping nonfiction, urban vampires, or children's picture books, you'll find it at the Author Hop.

Here's everything you need to know:

19 regional authors will be set up across 11 downtown businesses from 5pm to 8pm. This event will happen rain or shine! We recommend making a "loop" through downtown, starting at either Plaid Elephant Books or Mystical Bluegrass. You can pick up a physical map of our author placements at either location - or use the interactive Google map at www.plaidelephantbooks.com/authorhop to plan your route.

Get your map signed at each location you visit, then turn it in after the hop for the chance to win a prize basket filled with books by our participating authors!

While you're downtown, enjoy the other Third Thursday festivities, including a Main Street Farmers Market. The entertainment district will also be active, meaning you can grab a drink from a downtown eatery and sip while you stroll.

Now that we are officially back in school and your kids' teachers want them to be reading at home every night, it seemed like a good time for another Middle Grade Book Chat!

Great books are even better when you can talk about them. Join us on Saturday, September 26th at 9am for a discussion of "The Second Life of Snap" by Erin Entrada Kelly - a story of robots, friendship, and survival in a dystopian future. Our conversation will be facilitated by Lois Sepahban, librarian at Danville High School, and a published middle grade author.

Your $20 registration fee includes a hardcover copy of the book (signed copies available while supplies last) plus snacks at the event. This book is geared to readers ages 9+.

Ready for a big dose of nostalgia??

It's Magic Eye!!! I recently discovered that these classic books of optical illusions from my childhood are still in print. Do you remember these from the 90s??

You look at the pictures and sort of let your eyes lose focus and - PRESTO! - a 3D image seems to appear in the midst of the patterns. It's trippy. Time to share the weirdness with the next generation.

"The Great Wherever" by Shannon Sanders was one of my summer reads. I was hooked by this line on the back: "The dead are relentless gossips, or at least these dead are."

Tell me that doesn't grab your attention!

This is a sweeping novel about a place and the people who trace their roots to it, narrated by the ghosts who remain tethered to the land. At the center is a family farm in Tennessee on the outskirts of a thriving Black community that was established in the early days of emancipation.

We meet Aubrey, the most recent member of the family, who has just discovered she inherited a portion of the farm when her father died. She's young and scattered, struggling to make ends meet and mourning the loss of her father and the end of a serious relationship.

But we also meet a variety of her ancestors, as the story weaves together Aubrey's current escapades with the history of her family and the farm. All narrated by the wry and somewhat judgy ghosts of said ancestors, starting with Aubrey's great-grandfather, one of the first Black landowners in his community.

It's not a breathless page-turner, but I enjoyed the steady unfolding of the story across generations.
