Universal thanks are due to Nichelle Nichols for her presence on and off screen. Her character Lt Nyota Uhura reinforced the idea that everyone had a place in space, in our culture, and on the Bridge. Her representation was so unique and important in 1967 that she recalled Dr King himself telling her "When we see you we see ourselves, and we see ourselves as intelligent, beautiful and proud".
Uhura was half of TV's most famous kiss; her partner in it regularly macked on purple and green females from other planets but parts of the US blew up when he kissed a human woman that was Black. Less known but amusing in retrospect are her scenes seducing or being wooed by now out George Takei.
Sulu: I'll protect you, fair maiden!
Uhura: Sorry, neither.
