Before you order an interior door, think like someone who does this every day.

Contractors start with style. Flat panel, raised panel, shaker. That one choice narrows everything else.

Then the sticking profile. Square sticking for shaker styles. Bead and cove for traditional looks. This is what gives the door its character around the edges.

Then height. Most standard openings are 6/8. Taller spaces need 8/0.

Then width. Standard widths run from 1/6 up to 3/0. Custom sizes are available when the opening doesn't fit the standard range.

Last, the core. Solid core for noise or fire rating needs. Hollow core for standard interior use.

Style, profile, height, width, core.

It sounds simple. It usually isn't.

Hollow core doors cost less and are lighter. Common in new construction for a reason. But they don't block sound well and don't hold up to heavy use.

Solid-core doors cost more. Sometimes, $100 to $200 more per door. But they're heavier, quieter, and feel more substantial.

Hollow core works fine for closets and low-traffic rooms. Solid core makes more sense for bedrooms, home offices, and anywhere noise matters.

Weight is the easiest test. If you can pick it up with one hand, it's hollow.

The rooms you use most will tell you if you got it right.
