Replacing a door comes down to one question.

Keep the old frame, or replace the whole thing?

Swapping just the slab sounds simpler and cheaper.

But an old frame is often worn, out of square, or shifted from years of settling.

A new slab in a bad frame still sticks.

It still drafts.

It still fights the latch.

A pre-hung door replaces the whole unit. Frame, hinges, and slab are already fitted together.

You start square, instead of hoping the old frame still is.

The cheaper fix isn't always the one that lasts.

Steel doors are affordable upfront.

That's often why people choose them.

They're widely available, easy to install, and hold up fine in many situations.

The main thing to know is how steel responds to temperature.

It expands and contracts with heat and cold.

Over time, that movement can affect how well the door seals.

Most steel doors carry a 1 to 5 year warranty.

That's worth factoring in when you're thinking about long-term performance.

For short timelines or tighter budgets, steel is a reasonable choice.

For projects where the door needs to perform for 20 or 30 years, it's worth comparing options before deciding.

Before you order an interior door, think like someone who does this every day.

Contractors start with style. Flat panel, raised panel, shaker. That one choice narrows everything else.

Then the sticking profile. Square sticking for shaker styles. Bead and cove for traditional looks. This is what gives the door its character around the edges.

Then height. Most standard openings are 6/8. Taller spaces need 8/0.

Then width. Standard widths run from 1/6 up to 3/0. Custom sizes are available when the opening doesn't fit the standard range.

Last, the core. Solid core for noise or fire rating needs. Hollow core for standard interior use.

Style, profile, height, width, core.

Five things. That's all you need to order the right door.

You don't notice how much a door can change the look of your home.

Until you do it.

Same house. Same neighborhood. Same driveway.

But something looks different now.

That's what a new front door actually does.

It's not a big renovation. It's one change.

But it's the first thing people see.

And when the old one goes, you wonder why you waited.

Siding prices have shifted a lot in the last few years.

Some materials are harder to find.
Some are sitting in warehouses at prices that make sense right now.

That gap matters for anyone budgeting a project in Georgia.

The homeowners and builders who move when the price is right spend less.
The ones who wait often pay more for the same product.

If you have a project coming up, it's worth a quick call to see what's in stock before the estimate locks in.

Solid core or hollow core.

It sounds simple. It usually isn't.

Hollow core doors cost less and are lighter. Common in new construction for a reason. But they don't block sound well and don't hold up to heavy use.

Solid-core doors cost more. Sometimes, $100 to $200 more per door. But they're heavier, quieter, and feel more substantial.

Hollow core works fine for closets and low-traffic rooms. Solid core makes more sense for bedrooms, home offices, and anywhere noise matters.

Weight is the easiest test. If you can pick it up with one hand, it's hollow.

The rooms you use most will tell you if you got it right.

Most remodels go sideways before the first nail is pulled.

Not because of bad products.

Because of timing.

A door ordered a week late can push your whole schedule back by a month.

Here is what most people miss:

Materials have lead times. Some ship fast. Others take weeks. Custom sizes take longer.

Know what you need before the demo starts.

Ask three things early:

What do I actually need?
What is in stock right now?
How long will the rest take?

Those answers shape your whole timeline.

Twenty minutes at the start saves weeks in the middle.

Black-framed windows look expensive.

They don't have to be.

The frame color is doing most of the visual work.

Black-framed windows create contrast against light siding, make trim lines feel sharper, and pull a modern look together fast.

The material underneath matters too.

But if the goal is the aesthetic, the frame is where to start.

Vinyl windows with black exterior frames have come a long way.

The performance is solid.

The price is not what most people expect.

Worth knowing before you assume it's out of reach.

People see a door or window priced well below retail and wonder what the catch is.

That's a fair question.

Liquidation materials are priced lower because of how they move through the supply chain. Overstock, canceled orders, product line changes, and end-of-run inventory. The reason for the discount is the situation, not the product.

A door doesn't get cheaper to make just because a distributor ordered too many. It gets cheaper to buy because someone needs to move it.

Lower price doesn't mean lower standard.

It means the timing worked out in your favor.
