A woman in Delaware had a dream about her son in Iraq.

Catherine Roberts saw him wrapped in a quilt. She woke up and sewed one herself. It went to a wounded soldier at Walter Reed instead of her own son.

Quilters across the country picked up the idea and kept going. The 450,000th Quilt of Valor went to a retired Army major in July 2026, out of more than 454,000 hand-sewn for veterans touched by war so far.

About a hundred more are finished every day - volunteers are already piecing the next one.

On this day, American inventor Isaac Merritt Singer secured a patent that would stitch the nation into the age of mass production. His 1851 sewing machine wasn’t the first—others, like Elias Howe, had paved key pieces of the way—but Singer’s foot-treadle, straight-needle design made sewing faster, sturdier, and accessible to ordinary households and workshops. Marking the 175th anniversary, it’s worth noting a hidden innovation wasn’t purely mechanical: Singer pioneered installment plans and in-home demonstrations, an early blend of technology and modern marketing that helped his machines spread worldwide.

The Singer machine reshaped work. It shortened the time to make a shirt from hours to minutes, supercharging ready-to-wear clothing and fueling the rise of the garment industry in cities like New York. It also transformed domestic labor—women could earn wages from home—and sparked fierce patent battles that led to one of America’s first “patent pools,” a legal truce that kept innovation moving. From factory floors to family parlors, Singer’s sewing machine stitched together a new consumer economy.

Happy Summer!! Introducing the S&ST Summer Lovin’ Stitch-A-Long! Each week for 6 weeks participants will receive a fabric kit & pattern to complete one of the 6 super cute summer blocks! At the end of the program, participants will receive a complete pattern. You will have the option to purchase a finishing kit with a variety of fabric strips or create your own from your stash!! Kits can either be picked up in the shop each week or mailed.

Join us for our own little twist on Summer Camp with the S&ST Summer Lovin’ Stitch-A-Long! Registration ends June 21st and 1st pick up & mail out will be June 29th! Pickups can be made anytime beginning Tuesday of the release week.
