Dewitt Baseball Softball Association had a field dedication yesterday, dedicating the 10U baseball field to my dad. It was a very special time for each of us. Yesterday, June 5, would have also been my mom and dad‘s 54th wedding anniversary. My mom and dad, through Tommys Rexall, have supported the league since its inception many many years ago (somewhere in the late 70’s or early 80’s). And they have always sponsored 10U baseball team (i guess at one point it was 9-12yr League). It wasn’t until eight years ago that they actually had a kid or grandkid represented on the field. That didn’t stop them from going out and supporting and cheering on the teams year after year. They have always been more than just a sponsor. Us girls, remember many nights of him rushing when he got off work to grab us and go watch league baseball. Mom and dad didn’t just give money for advertisement. It wasn’t about that. Moreso, they invested their time and efforts into the youth of our community.
So from all of us, thank you DBSA for this honor and for recognizing the efforts and qualities of this incredible man that we were blessed to be loved by our entire lives.
Below are the words the DBSA shared at the presentation:
We are very blessed to be in a community full of people who are willing to help out with this organization. We are even more blessed because Mr. Tommy Black was a huge part of that. For over 40 years he not only sponsored teams, and donated to fundraisers, but he showed up. Even when he did not have children and grandchildren on these fields, he was here showing his support. His smile and his laugh lit up every room that he walked in. His heart was bigger than anyone I have ever known. He didn’t just show up, but he truly cared. If we had just a few more people like him in the world, this would be a much better place. This field is the 10U boys field, which is the team that he has sponsored for many years. He dedicated so much to us while he was still here, and it is our honor and privilege to dedicate this field in memory of Mr. Tommy Black.
