Tennyson excelled at penning short lyrics, such as "Break, Break, Break", "The Charge of the Light Brigade", "Tears, Idle Tears", and "Crossing the Bar". Much of his verse was based on classical mythological themes, such as Ulysses.

Tennyson also wrote some notable blank verse including Idylls of the King, "Ulysses", and "Tithonus".

A number of phrases from Tennyson's work have become commonplaces of the English language, including: "'Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all"; …."Theirs not to reason why, / Theirs but to do and die"; …… "My strength is as the strength of ten, / Because my heart is pure", …… "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield"; …. "Knowledge comes, but Wisdom lingers"; ….."The old order changeth, yielding place to new"; and ….."Nature, red in tooth and claw" ;

Which is what he is perhaps best know for from numerous High School English classes is “The Charge of the Light Brigade.”

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred………

Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period, best known for "Typee" (1846), a romantic account of his experiences in Polynesian life, and his whaling novel "Moby-Dick" (1851).

Fun Fact: Much of Melville’s later work, which is now considered his most highly regarded fiction, was neither critically nor commercially successful during his lifetime. For instance, between 1863 and 1887, an average of only 23 copies of "Moby-Dick" were sold annually. Today, "Moby-Dick" sells more copies each year than were sold in the entire nineteenth century and is recognized as a classic. Interestingly, its influence extends into the modern world of coffee and capitalism: the founders of the Starbucks chain took the name from a character in Melville’s novel.

During the last thirty years of his life, his work was nearly forgotten. Melville's writing draws from his experiences as a common sailor, his exploration of literature and philosophy, and his engagement with the contradictions of American society during a time of rapid change.

He developed a complex, baroque style characterized by rich and original vocabulary, a strong sense of rhythm in his elaborate sentences, and imagery that is often mystical or ironic. His writing is abundant with allusions to Scripture, myth, philosophy, literature, and the visual arts.

On her website she wrote that she had always known she would be a book author. "As soon as I knew what writers were, I wanted to be one. I've got the perfect temperament for a writer; perfectly happy alone in a room, making things up."

Rowling, now Britain's 13th wealthiest woman—wealthier than even the Queen—does not plan to write any more books in the series, but has not entirely ruled out the possibility.

"My books are largely about death," she told the Telegraph in 2006, referencing not only the death of Harry's parents, but also the villain Voldemort's obsession with immortality. "I so understand why Voldemort wants to conquer death. We're all frightened of it."

After receiving "loads" of rejections from book publishers when she first sent out the manuscript, Bloomsbury, a publishing house in London, gave "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" the green light in 1997. She added the "K" to her pen name (for Kathleen, her paternal grandmother) at the publisher's request, since women's names were found to be less appealing to the target audience of young boys.

According to the book "Who the Hell Is Pansy O'Hara?: The Fascinating Stories Behind 50 of the World's Best-Loved Books," three days after the Harry Potter book was published in the UK, Scholastic bid $100,000 for the American publishing rights, an unprecedented amount for a children's book at the time.

DID YOU KNOW…. Wuthering Heights now considered a classic of English literature and a staple of HS English was her only published novel.

Wuthering Heights, with its intense violence and passion, initially led the Victorian public and early reviewers to mistake it for the work of a male author. According to Juliet Gardiner, "the vivid sexual passion and the powerful language and imagery impressed, bewildered, and even appalled reviewers." Despite receiving mixed reviews upon its initial release and facing criticism for its portrayal of amoral passion, the novel eventually ascended to become a classic of English literature.

Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights debuted in London in 1847, comprising the first two volumes of a three-volume set alongside Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey. Initially published under the pseudonyms Ellis and Acton Bell, Emily's true identity was not revealed until 1850, when her name appeared on the title page of a revised commercial edition. The novel's innovative structure posed a challenge to contemporary critics.

Booth Tarkington (born today July 29, 1869 – 1946) An American novelist and dramatist best known for his novels The Magnificent Ambersons and Alice Adams. He is one of only three novelists to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once.

Tarkington was an unabashed Midwestern regionalist and set much of his fiction in his native Indiana.

While his service as an Indiana legislator was his only official public service position, he remained politically conservative his entire life. He supported Prohibition, opposed FDR, and worked against FDR's New Deal.

Tarkington was one of the more popular American novelists of his time. His The Two Vanrevels and Mary's Neck appeared on the annual best-seller lists a total of nine times.

The Penrod novels depict a typical upper-middle class American boy of 1910 vintage, revealing a fine, bookish sense of American humor. At one time, his Penrod series was as well-known as Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.

Much of Tarkington's work consists of satirical and closely observed studies of the American class system and its foibles. He himself came from a patrician Midwestern family that lost much of its wealth after the Panic of 1873.

Today, he is best known for his novel The Magnificent Ambersons, which Orson Welles filmed in 1942. It is included in the Modern Library's list of top-100 novels. The second volume in Tarkington's Growth trilogy, it contrasted the decline of the "old money" Amberson dynasty with the rise of "new money" industrial tycoons in the years between the American Civil War and World War I.

Tarkington dramatized several of his novels; some were eventually filmed. He also collaborated with Harry Leon Wilson to write three plays. In 1928, he published a book of reminiscences, The World Does Move. He illustrated the books of others, including a 1933 reprint of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as well as his own.
