Slow bites can be dealt with a number of ways. One of my favorites is jigging a flutter spoon until my arm falls off. There are always a few that will react to the slow, lumbering fall. The Tsunami Fishing Tackle Pro 9" pearl white spoon is one of my go-to's, especially in murky river or mid-sound water.

On a side note, if you see someone drifting and casting plugs a country mile in a specific direction, don't troll through the zone with the outboard running. I struggled to find fish willing to feed up high all morning, then found a pile of fish in 12 feet lining the bottom that were willing to come all the way up to hit a surface plug. Of course, I lost 3 or 4 mid-fight and missed a half dozen others. Then, a boat trolled right through the zone, and proceeded to "let me know" how many fish were there, and then proclaimed they had lockjaw because they wouldn't hit an umbrella rig. Ok, pal. I never got another one to come up after that, and many of them scattered. Etiquette goes a long way. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

A total grind this morning. I was able to get a few to pounce on the Nessie 9" late in the tide, though.

One of the coolest and most productive fish ladders I've ever visited. I could have watched the gulls fish all day. In Maine, regulations are a little different on river herring. They are harvested right at many of the ladders for lobster bait, and human consumption as well. They also take measures to ensure overharvesting and predation don't collapse the populations. This ladder had netting over it the whole way up past the riffle where the gulls were gorging themselves. The construction of the ladder is very unique, too, with small pools that connect all the way up to the lake. We visited a few other runs while up there, but this one stole the show. If you ever find yourself in mid coast Maine mid to late May, this is something you'll want to see for yourself.
