First time ever seeing these available! We have a few really nice Electric Blue Black Rams in this weeks order. The Electric Blues are getting better looking by the day. We also received a super nice batch of Red Neon Blue Eyes at a great price. They’re also coloring up nicely in our store system. These will not last long, they might even be gone by the weekend.

Humming Bird Tetras available in the store! We also received a batch of Sundadanio axelrodi “Red” variant. We’ve had the axelrodi “Blue” available a few times and they color up into really impressive fish. The Humming Bird Tetras are way better looking in person and even have an iridescent stripe along the inside of their rib cage that’s highly reflective giving them a bright pink stripe in our store tank. The bright yellow on their back is already coming in and their bright red tails make for a really cool display fish for a species that’s almost entirely clear. These were a special order for a client and we ordered some extra for our regular store customers. These do not come around often and we have limited numbers.

This week’s livestock order arrives Thursday, and we’ll have another great selection of freshwater fish available, including these beautiful Trochilocharax ornatus, also known as Hummingbird Tetras.

We also have more live aquarium plants on the way, with several popular varieties back in stock. If you’re setting up a new planted aquarium, adding to an existing community tank, or just looking for something new, there should be plenty to choose from.

We’re constantly asked “what are the ideal plant tank parameters” or helping customers address issues “why are my plants not growing or doing well”. Most of the time it’s gaps in basic nutrients that are easily addressable. The main nitrate, phosphate, and potassium levels are the three macro nutrients you need to get under control first. If you aren’t using quality fertilizers or aqua soil it’s going to be a lot harder to maintain healthy plants because you’re just starving them. Your home planted tank display should remain fairly stable as far as nutrient demand, so getting on a regular dosing schedule that covers most of your plant’s needs is easy. In most cases, one or two bottles of fertilizers is enough to cover your needs and keep your plants thriving.

The grid image of all the necessary parameters to keep track of is in order of importance from top left to bottom right. Feel free to keep these as a reference.

CO2 gas is naturally present in solution in your aquarium water. CO2 injection is just boosting the available CO2 for plant respiration giving them more of what they need. Some advanced plants do require added CO2 injection, but for a lot of the easier plants it’s just an added benefit if you decide to take that step.

We got a few questions about Eriocaulon buergerianum from our last post. This is one of the plants we’ll be growing out as an aquarium plant and for terrariums (it’s doing great in both for us). Like the Eriocaulon vietnam that we have available this one is also a dense carpeting plant if you let it grow in and replant clippings. While the vietnam is super easy and fast growing, the buergerianum is slower and more demanding in aquarium applications.

I really wouldn’t label it a slow grower since we’re getting decent growth everywhere we’ve put it after it settled in from tissue culture clippings. As a foreground to midground plant for aquariums it looks different from your usual grass like plants with tighter tufted rosettes of smaller compact leaves. Once it’s settled it roots pretty quickly and starts growing. We’re looking forward to seeing this grown out as a carpeting plant and an accent in some terrarium displays.

The store is packed right now! This terrarium and aquarium plant order is finally settled and doing great. We have a ton of new anubias strains, a few Philippine Anubias (Schismatoglottis prietoi) available, a new rare species of Eriocaulon that we’re growing out (really cool looking), Begonias, several types of Selaginella, Hygrophila angustifolia Rubra that’s gettting bushy, Hygrophila compact, several species of Bucephelandra all growing in, mosses, we also have a new strain of sword Echinodorus xinguensis that suddenly started growing hot pink runners! We have a wider selection of strains and species in stock right now than we’ve ever had before and most of it is easy stuff all the way up to more advanced plants for those of you who have discovered how great CO2 is. We’ve also been converting some of the aquatic plants to terrestrial growth so we have some species available for both aquarium and vivarium use!

This Star Sapphire Tanzania African Cichlid is even better looking in person. This was a random pick from our normal batch that went to a service client we see weekly, so we’ve gotten to see this fish go from just a really nice deep blue fish to the stud you see before you. We have one juvenile Sapphire left in the store right now. They don’t come around all the time from this breeder.

This was a fun interview and we discussed a lot more than what made it into the final article. It’s always good talking about what goes into designing custom aquariums with people who aren’t in the hobby or industry, but have an interest. You always get a new perspective on what they think is cool or interesting. Thanks Dan’s Papers for the interest in what we’re doing!
