I’ve made posts like this before when business has been slow, and every time I hesitate because I hate feeling like I’m standing here asking people to come spend money. At the same time, people have told me over and over that they would rather know when things are bad than watch me quietly stress myself half to death trying to keep everything afloat, so here we are again.
It’s September 20th.
Pop Fizzion has had three sales this month.
$70 gross.
That screenshot is the actual sales report from the shop and this isn’t just one weird week. The only reason I’ve managed to keep everything paid through August and September is because I did a single pop-up that brought in some money and picked up outside contract IT work. Right now, money I’m earning somewhere else is keeping Pop Fizzion open. That is how bad things have gotten.
I know money is tight for everyone. Mine obviously is too. Bath and body products are not necessities, and I am never going to tell somebody to spend money they don’t have just to keep my business alive. I understand that groceries cost too much, rent costs too much, everything costs too much, and everybody is having to make choices about where their money goes.
At the same time, a physical storefront cannot support itself on three transactions in twenty days. Unfortunately, I am also locked into a two-year lease. The bills for this space do not disappear if nobody walks through the door. They do not disappear if I make less product, shorten hours, or get discouraged enough that I don’t want to come in. I still have to pay for this place. So I’m stuck in a pretty miserable cycle right now, you know?
I make everything myself, and I want the things you buy here to be fresh. I do not want to dump hundreds of dollars and hours of work into manufacturing piles of product just so the shelves look packed if those products are going to sit there for months. Until a few weeks ago, I still had Grinch bath bombs from Christmas 2025 sitting on the shelf.
That means I have been making smaller batches and being much more careful about what I stock. There is still a good selection in the shop, and I’m still making things, but every batch right now is a financial decision. Making more inventory means putting more money into ingredients, packaging, labels, fragrance, labor, and everything else before I know whether anyone is actually going to come in and buy it. Which especially sucks right now, because we’re moving into my favorite part of the entire year.
Spooky season.
This is usually when my brain starts going absolutely wild with ideas for all the spooky stuff I love. I’m also going to Tulsa Pride in October, so I have an event coming up that I should be excitedly preparing for. Instead, I’ve been struggling to find the motivation to even come sit in the shop some days.
It’s hard to get excited about spending hours designing, testing, making, packaging, photographing, labeling, and putting out new products when I’m looking at a sales report telling me almost nobody is coming in to see them.
I’m working on the online side of the business too. The website badly needs an overhaul, and I’m actively rebuilding it. That process is going slower than I would like, partly because money is tight, and partly because I am not willing to solve the problem by filling the site with cheap generative AI work just to get it done faster.
I know that would probably be cheaper. I know it would be faster but I don’t want to do that.
I make things for a living. A huge portion of the people who support this business are artists, writers, makers, fandom people, q***r creators, and other small businesses. Asking people to value the things I create while turning around and using technology built on other people’s creative work without their consent does not sit right with me.
So the website is coming. It is just coming slower than I wish it were.
In the meantime, the physical store is still here and I really do love this place. I love making weird s**t. I love taking a character, a book, a movie, a terrible joke, or some random scent combination rattling around in my head and turning it into an actual product. I love when somebody comes in looking for one thing and ends up wandering around smelling everything for half an hour. I love when somebody picks something up, smells it, immediately gets the reference, and starts laughing.
I still have so much s**t I want to make.
I have spooky products I want to work on.
I have Tulsa Pride to prepare for.
I have a website I’m rebuilding.
I have more ideas than I have time to make.
What I don’t currently have is enough people walking through the door. Right now, Pop Fizzion is not paying for Pop Fizzion. My outside work is and I cannot keep doing that indefinitely.
So if you are one of the people who has been saying, “I really need to stop by there again sometime,” I’m asking you to make sometime soon.
You do not have to spend $50 or $100. Come grab a bath bomb. Grab some soap. Pick up a scrub. Come smell things. See what I’ve been making. Bring a friend who has never been here.
If spending money is not possible right now, I understand. Sharing this post helps. Commenting helps. Tagging somebody who would love the shop helps. Recommending us when someone asks where to find locally made bath and body products helps. Even reminding somebody who used to shop here that we are still around helps. Coming here instead of to the newly opened Bath and Body works DEFINITELY helps.
I’m not saying any of this to guilt anybody.
I’m saying it because there is a pretty big difference between “business has been slow” and “the store has made $70 in twenty days and outside contract work is currently paying its bills.”
People have told me before that they would rather I say something when things get bad instead of quietly drowning behind the counter and letting everybody find out after the fact.
So I’m saying something.
I’m still here.
I still want to make weird s**t.
I would just really like some people on the other side of the door.
