A GLORIOUS LEGACY BROUGHT TO LIGHT
Some shiny pages that had gone missing out of the Indian Police history stand deftly pasted in this work. Just call to mind the patrolmen of the Intelligence Bureau and the C.R.P. Force, without proper padded clothing, bearing the brunt of icy winds in the ghostly plateau of Aksai Chin year after year. This saga of manly effort to safeguard the territorial integrity of the country in the face of deathly odds, would send a flutter through many hearts. The story of a loving couple, so deftly woven in this web of history gives an added reading pleasure.

A SAGA WRITTEN ON THE SNOWS
Besides taking note of the C.R.P.F./I.B. men, facing challenges of the elements and the Chinese Army so bravely, the book also tries to smoothly integrate the Buddhist culture of Ladakh and the Hindu ethos of Nepal. It also touches upon the plight of Uighurs in Xinjiang and the revived Chinese propensity of asserting themselves as ‘the Middle Kingdom’ once again by flexing their muscles both in the East and West. This has brought them in clash with many countries on their periphery, including India.

The book rightly observes that Pt. Nehru was a man of peace and totally devoted to the task of speedy development of his impoverished nation. At the same time, he was over-confident of his diplomatic skills and charms. Our sensitive borders with resurgent China thus got neglected. The Chinese harshly brought home to him that diplomacy in the absence of military might cannot achieve much. Nonetheless, we cannot lose sight of the superhuman efforts and sacrifices of a small ill-clad, ill-equipped C.R.P.F. subunit, led by D.C.I.O. Karam Singh of the Intelligence Bureau, that tried to safeguard the integrity of the country against heavy odds. Their going behind the enemy lines to recce the Aksai Chin Road and bravely fighting an uneven battle against the regular Chinese Army, particularly deserve to be remembered and revered. The book brings these little known( unearthly exploits of the police platoon to the notice of the countrymen.

Today, the 21st October, happens to be the ‘POLICE COMMEMORATION DAY’. At the foundation of this lies the sacrifice of a subunit of the C.R.P. Force that fought a mini battle with the Chinese Army on the banks of River Chang Chemo between Hot Spring and Kongka La. While 10 gallant C.R.P.F. jawans fell martyrs in this action, they did not fail to draw first blood from the enemy also, in that they killed Wn Ching-Kuo, the Chinese deputy commander in the area. Earlier, in 1958, these intrepid men, under the leadership of legendary Karam Singh of the Intelligence Bureau, had gone behind the enemy lines to explore the Aksai Chin Road (now under the Chinese occupation) and planted our tri-colour at our claimed boundary point at 80 degrees, 12 minutes East/35 degrees, 3 minutes North. These glorious exploits are celebrated in my books, ‘THE POLICE WARRIORS ON THE INDO-CHINESE BORDER IN LADAKH’ and ‘CLASH AT KONGKA LA’, available with M/S Shanti Books (Mob. 9868957018).
