🌟🌿 EARTH STAR CARE 101 🌿🌟
Many of you recently added a gorgeous Cryptanthus Earth Star to your collection — especially the stunning Elaine 💗 and Absolute Zero 🤍🖤 — so let's talk about how to keep these funky little beauties thriving!
First things first: Earth Stars are bromeliads... but they don't want to be treated like your typical bromeliad! They are terrestrial, meaning they grow in soil and take up water through their roots. 🌱
☀️ LIGHT:
Give them bright, indirect light to keep those incredible colors and patterns looking their best. Too little light can cause their colors to fade, while harsh midday sun can scorch their leaves.
💧 WATER:
Earth Stars like their soil lightly and consistently moist — but NEVER soggy. Let the very top of the soil begin to dry before watering again.
🚫 Don't fill the center cup with water!
Unlike many bromeliads, Cryptanthus should be watered at the soil/root zone, not by keeping water sitting in the center rosette.
💨 HUMIDITY:
These tropical little stars LOVE humidity! ⭐ Aim for moderate-to-high humidity when possible. They'll especially appreciate a humidifier or a naturally humid plant room.
🌡️ TEMPERATURE:
Normal household temperatures are usually perfect. Keep them warm and away from cold drafts, AC vents and chilly windows.
🪴 SOIL:
Use a mix that holds a little moisture while still providing excellent drainage and airflow. Soggy roots are NOT their friend.
👶 AND HERE'S THE FUN PART...
Your Earth Star can eventually produce PUPS! 🌱🌱🌱
Like other bromeliads, the mother plant will bloom once in its lifetime and eventually begin producing little offsets around its base. Those babies can grow into brand-new Earth Stars — so don't panic when you see them appear!
