Found a broken egg more than once? Start with the setup before blaming the hen.

Collect eggs promptly, keep nests clean and comfortably cushioned, provide enough nest space, remove broken eggs right away, and make sure the flock’s complete feed is doing most of the nutritional work.

Small flock problems are much easier to handle when you catch them early.

Our favorite rhythm is simple:

• Daily: fresh water, feed check, egg collection, and a quick look at every bird
• Weekly: clean feeders and drinkers, refresh damp bedding, and inspect the coop
• Monthly: check latches, wire, pests, stored feed, and first-aid supplies
• Seasonally: adjust for changing daylight and weather

Trying to determine whether a young chick is a hen or rooster can take patience. Comb development, feather shape, posture, behaviour, and breed characteristics may offer clues as the chick grows.

Some breeds are easier to identify early, while others keep everyone guessing for weeks.

Less feed on the ground means more feed for the flock.

The My Favorite Chicken 40 lb Treadle Feeder helps keep dry feed covered and reduces the scratching and spilling that can turn feeding time into cleanup time. The adjustable treadle lets you introduce the mechanism gradually so your birds can learn how it works.

Would a treadle feeder solve a problem in your setup?

Fresh water, dependable shade, and good ventilation are essential when temperatures rise. Cooling treats such as chilled cucumber or watermelon can also offer a refreshing addition in moderation.

Check water throughout the day and pay close attention to panting, drooping wings, or unusual tiredness.

Still adding dry material to the same muddy spot?

The lasting fix usually starts with finding where the water is coming from.

Check roof runoff, downspouts, leaking drinkers, low spots, and the areas where chickens concentrate traffic. Redirect or repair the water source before rebuilding the surface. No single run material works everywhere, so match the finished surface to your drainage, soil, rainfall, and cleaning routine.

What creates the most mud in your run?
