Hayes Lyon (1909–1987) was a prominent American modernist and Regionalist painter, muralist, and illustrator. He is heavily associated with Colorado, where he grew up and spent the formative decades of his artistic career capturing the topography, figures, and urban scenes of the American West.

Lyon’s artistic and academic foundations were established entirely along Colorado’s Front Range. His family relocated to Boulder in 1920. Lyon first graduated with a B.A. in Economics from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1931. He immediately returned to art, earning a B.F.A. from the University of Denver in 1937. He studied under highly influential Southwest and regional masters, including Jozef Bakos (of Los Cinco Pintores), John E. Thompson (who introduced modernism to Denver), and Andrew Dasburg.
