The ‘special’ gift of speech isn’t always guaranteed.
Thankfully, for many of you reading this post, you’ll have no idea how it feels not to be able to communicate. Not to be able to do something as ‘simple’ as talk. Some of you may have a bit of an idea from watching a loved one struggle but unless you have actually lived it, spent even just one day not being able to communicate, then you can’t truly understand. The fear, the frustration, the loneliness.
Can you imagine, even for one minute, not being able to get your needs across verbally? You can’t tell someone that your hungry or thirsty, you need the toilet, you’re hurt or scared, you can’t even tell someone that you love them.
Imagine that something exciting has happened and you just want to tell someone. Just this once you’re hoping that someone understands but they second guess, they finish your sentence for you but it’s not what you are trying to say. If only they would stop trying to talk for you, stop talking over you. If only they would listen, really listen.
Then, everyone talks at such a fast pace and why wouldn’t they? After all we live is such a busy world. Unfortunately, this fast pace doesn’t give us time to join in, so we just sit there and we listen, trying so hard to process the conversation. We are not sat in silence because we are quiet or shy. We are sat in silence because we know that we can’t keep up with the conversation.
Please remember that just because we struggle to speak, it doesn’t mean we have nothing to say. We have so much to say! We just need time.
