As if this year hasn’t been eventful enough, we have some news regarding our sassy girl.
A couple of weeks ago, we noticed a couple of very large lumps on Willow. One just below her ear towards her face and the other larger one just above her shoulder, both subcutaneous. She’d been acting like her usual silly self but we got them checked out. Fine needle aspiration detected grade 2 Mast Cell Tumors in both. While waiting for our specialist appointment, her appetite has been down, has show signs of pain, and she doesn’t want to play frisbee, which if you know us well enough know that that is UNHEARD of.

The wonderful team in Tampa gave us news that we didn’t want to hear but that wasn’t overly shocking. The tumors are in a location where they are inoperable. If by some miracle surgery was possible, it would be very invasive, even possibly having to remove her ear canal in the process and there is almost no chance for clean margins. She isn’t a good candidate for chemo.

The surgeon told us that we could spend thousands of dollars in tests but that the end result will be relatively the same. The thought of her putting her through a million tests and several organ FNA’s, knowing that her chances of recovery in all scenarios is low, is an unbearable one.

So, as a family we’ve decided on palliative care for our girl. Steroids, antihistamines and tummy meds.

While we are devastated by this news, especially so closely after losing Daphne, we now understand that time with Willow is of the essence and we plan to keep loving her the way we have for the past ten years- respectfully and wholeheartedly, with joy that she is ours.
