Market Day is still on hiatus. We miss pop ups, too. We’re still not ready to run big indoor markets and enforce mask-wearing for the safety of artists and organizers and shoppers. Hope y’all are doing well.

Over the past year, the pandemic made friends and family sick, shuttered shops, and cancelled shows like ours. People worldwide reached out to neighbors and supported each other. Through it all, the Market Day team has been meeting over Zoom, trying to do our part to keep our communities safe and connected.

The pandemic also forced us to do something that we haven't done in a long time: slow down and look at the ways we've been taught to embrace hustle culture. We'd been working so hard and so long on growing these events and this community, we didn't realize that we had begun to lose ourselves in the process. We wondered if we were really serving the community in the ways we wanted to. The hustle took precedence over important relationships, work/life balance, and the goals of our project, and COVID was what it took to finally put that in focus for us - and gave us space to examine the harm that hustle culture causes!

After many conversations, some doubts, and more than a few tears, we decided to continue Market Day's break. We did not come to this decision lightly. We miss each and every one of you: our wonderful artists who are the backbone of our community, our loyal and supportive shoppers, and our dependable volunteers. As show dates came and went, we held you all with love in our hearts, and we continue to.

Vaccines have helped slow the pandemic and allow us to see one another again, but this pandemic is far from over and many people in our communities are still vulnerable. The health of the community is our priority.

If and when we bring Market Day back, it will be with conversations with the community on how to better serve and build a wider community of white, Black, brown, Indigenous, women, q***r, trans, and gender noncomforming artists.

What does this mean? It means that our calendar is clean for now. Does it mean there will never be a Market Day again? We're not sure. We want y'all to stay in touch, so please stay subscribed. If there is ever any update (or perhaps a pop-up? could happen!) we will let you know.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for your years of love and support.

Cat, Dani, and Andrew

If you need us, we’ll just be making crafts in the corner until it’s safe to come out. But seriously, anyone got a lead on these mittens?

In a different world, our Black Friday Market would be happening in 1 week. This next week we would be scurrying around to make sure every last detail was thought of, every booth was marked off, and every swag bag was stuffed. Instead, things will be quieter this year. It was a tremendously tough decision to cancel our holiday markets but we know it was the right one. We are doing our part to help protect the ones we love and we hope you are too. Stay safe out there and know that we miss you all.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! The Market Day crew knows that a thriving community has a fertile creative garden at the center. In the uncertainty of 2020, it's become even clearer just how much we need artists. We need creativity to bring joy and light into dark days, to survive when rations are tight, and to build a new world. That's why we're glad to be in community with the artists of the Midwest, and all the people who are fans.

It takes a few months to plan shows as big as Black Friday and Merry Market, and since our crystal ball seems to be on the fritz, we don't know yet when it's going to be safe to get back together. So we've made the tough decision to call off our winter shows this year. We are only as healthy as the most vulnerable among us, and with that in mind, we aren't ready to host thousands of people in an indoor venue until it's safe for us, our elders, our kids, our families, our asthma-havers, our chemo-recipients, our immuno-suppressed, and others.

Since we can't meet in person, we'll spend time this fall and winter sharing all the best makers, artists, and crafters we can find. We're talking Instagram takeovers from your favorite makers and makers you haven’t met yet. We’re talking GIFT GUIDES. It’s gonna be great.

And when it's safe, we'll see you out there on the craft show road tour.

Love: Dani, Andrew, and Cat

Hey Market Day fam! We posted a link to an SBA Loan program last week. The article that we read seemed very cut and dry, and we did confirm with some friends in-the-know that it seemed legit. It turns out that the application and process is a lot more opaque than we thought, so to avoid confusion, we decided to pull it down. If you did try to take advantage of this program, make sure you read carefully, and feel free to contact us if you have questions! We can't promise we will know, but we will do our best.

Hey Market Day family! ArtForce Iowa, a longtime friend and partner to Market Day, needs our help! They had to cancel their annual fundraising event, leaving them short of their yearly budget.

GlobalGiving has chosen ArtForce Iowa during their June 2020 accelerator, which means they are eligible to receive matching funds if they meet their goal before the end of the month. ArtForce gives local children who are refugees, immigrants, or who are system involved a safe place to make art and music. So let's put this great organization OVER their goal line!
