On September 11, search-and-rescue dogs were sent into the wreckage of the World Trade Center to search for survivors and human remains.

They worked for hours among twisted metal, broken concrete, glass, smoke and fires. Many suffered cuts, burns, dehydration, exhaustion, eye irritation and respiratory problems. Veterinarians treated the dogs at Ground Zero, cleaning their paws and eyes, cooling them down and administering IV fluids when necessary.

And the trauma wasn't always physical. Some dogs became depressed and lost their motivation to search after repeatedly finding human remains instead of survivors. Handlers sometimes staged “mock finds” so the dogs could experience the reward of finding someone alive.

We remember these dogs as heroes —and they were.

But their stories also remind us of something we so often forget:

Animals don't choose the dangerous roles we give them. They trust us. And we decide what they are made to endure.

On 9/11, humans sent these animals into a place of unimaginable danger because we needed them.

They trusted us enough to follow.
