Small but clever, the Brown-headed Cowbird is a common sight across Iowa grasslands and backyards. Males have glossy black feathers with a rich brown head, while females are a soft brown overall.

Feeding Tips: They feed on seeds and insects, often foraging on the ground near grazing animals.

Fun Fact: Brown-headed Cowbird flocks are constantly moving in search of food, so they lay their eggs in other birds’ nests to be raised. Their chicks often push out or kill the host bird’s chicks to improve their own chances of survival.
