At Des Moines Feed & Nature Center, a small family-owned business that’s been around since 1944, we provide the highest quality feed for birds and small animals and the greatest value you’ll find. Over the years, we’ve worked hard to specialize our services and keep up with the latest health concerns, concentrating on nutritious formulas for chickens, wild birds, cage birds, and hobby pigeons -- all of which are non-GMO and non-medicated. Striking and endangered, the Northern Harrier makes its home within the sweeping expanses of Iowa's open grasslands, native prairies, and marshy wetlands. The breeding adults sport a distinctive owl-like facial disk, a prominent white patch on their rump, and long, broad wings—with males showing a sleek gray upper body and females featuring a pale underbelly streaked with brown.

Feeding Tips: They glide low over the terrain, relying on sharp hearing and keen eyesight to catch mice, voles, large insects, and small birds.

Elusive and endangered, the American Barn Owl makes its home within the quiet, remaining hollows of old farm structures, silos, and dead trees adjacent to Iowa's open grasslands. The breeding adults sport a ghostly, heart-shaped white facial disk, stunning golden-buff and gray upperparts, and a pure white to tawny underbelly speckled with tiny dark spots.

Feeding Tips: They feed heavily on meadow voles, mice, and other destructive small rodents.

Cryptic and highly threatened, the Short-eared Owl nests on the ground within Iowa’s largest remaining native prairies and undisturbed, expansive grasslands. The breeding adults sport a mottled tawny-brown plumage with heavily streaked pale underparts, prominent dark patches around their piercing yellow eyes, and barely visible ear tufts.

Striking and remarkably rare, the White-faced Ibis occasionally visits North Iowa's shallow marshlands and wet meadows. Breeding adults have a gorgeous, metallic-like plumage that shifts between dark maroon, glossy green, and golden bronze, anchored by a thin, white feathered mask at the base of their long, down-curved bill.

Feeding Tips: They feed on aquatic insects, leeches, crayfish, and small frogs.
