It's great to hear on the news that there is a renewed interest in bird watching and feeding among all ages, from the young to the young at heart. As an example, I was fishing with my grandsons this past week, and they happened to see a bright orange-and-black bird darting through the trees. They immediately wanted to know what kind it was, and I told them it was a Baltimore oriole and that you can attract them to your home by leaving out jelly or half-cut oranges. It wasn't too long before a large, great blue heron flew in front of us just above the water. Not only did we catch a lot of fish that day, but we also saw some amazing birds.

I think I got the joy of bird watching at a young age, living on a farm with my parents. We had multiple feeders and a variety of birds who would visit, including Baltimore Orioles, Goldfinches, Cardinals, and more. Now, as an adult, I find myself each day smiling and sometimes laughing at the antics of our feathered friends.

I found a great upcycled seed-starting container this weekend. If shop at COSTCO, (or know someone who does) look for the 24-pack of eggs or ask someone to save them for you. This plastic container is suitable for starting seeds and then transferring them to a larger peat pot or another container when they are bigger. Just remember, you'll need to punch holes in the bottom of each individual holder so water can drain from the bottom or water can wick up through the holes. And don't forget to place the plastic container on a tray to catch water. What's ideal is the lid when placed over the seed starting mix and seedlings acts as a mini greenhouse.
