Rosa Parks was a sista who had a long hard day on the right day. A woman who stood her ground in the face of extreme adversity. A woman who knew how to capitalize on a moment. Rosa Parks was the secretary of the NAACP in Montgomery, Alabama since 1943 and was arrested in 1955. She was a woman of strategy not just happen stance.

Amanda Gorman

This young woman, Amanda Gorman stole Americas heart when President Joe Biden chose her to be our poet laureate. Her poetry crosses over into activism, exploring the ideas of feminism, race, oppression, and the Black experience. She is young and she is as beautiful as the poetry she composes, making her a superstar in my mind. I felt the importance of her appointment and immediately started sketching a concept for a painting as soon as I saw her first appearance on TV. The magnificence of her image was inspiring to me, and I felt the need to honor her with a painting that was colorful, bright, and full of energy. Her positive energy was undeniable, and her ability to captivate an audience was obvious. This is the first of many painting I have planned of this young superstar.

This is a painting is of the greatest human being of all time, who just happened to be a woman. It is people like Harriet Tubman are responsible for making American history great. Honor, strength, empathy, and a giant list of positive qualities represent this woman.
She is the face that symbolizes America best.

It is one of the last painting I have available from this period of painting in my life.

African Beauty was inspired by a series of photographs taken of african tribes. This particular image is of a young girl from the Hamar tribe. The raw natural beauty of these young women touched me deeply, and this young ladies face was striking. There is something magical about african beauty, about dark black skin, and authentic tribal clothing. She looked like an angel to me, something so beautiful to behold it was hard to believe. In my work I try to stay away from using flat colors as a background, always searching for more. Im always trying to find shapes that will compliment the subject matter and support the idea of the painting. There are many symbols that have been used in african culture throughout time. The Andinkra symbol for beauty takes the shape of a classic comb and I thought this symbol fit perfectly with the image of this amazing young lady so i used it as a simple backdrop and Im very pleased with result. This piece is one of the few I have still available. ✨

Afro Beautiful was inspired by the powerhouse superstar of the civil rights era, one of the toughest women alive today, Angela Davis. This woman’s history, and accomplishments are awe inspiring. Her devotion to democracy and Black American culture is unmatched and her powerful face framed by her perfect afro was beautiful! She spoke to crowds about the truth of American history, and inspired millions of black folks to peacefully protest so our rights could be won!

Reciprocity is part of a series of paintings inspired by the brilliant Black Americans who paved the way for civil rights.
This painting was a commission conceived by friend and business partner Cliff Swindell. Cliffs vision for this painting demonstrates his passion for the civil rights era, and the amazing photographs it produced. After a life time of service to her community as a respected business owner Ella Watson posed for a photo in a government building with a mop and a broom strategically placed. Gordon Parks took the amazing photo of Ella Watson and named it “American Gothic”. He was a photographic genius who’s photos captivated the world as he documented what he saw through the civil rights era. In my sketch I decided to make Ella Watson holding the mop and broom, creating a more dramatic composition. Reciprocity
