Meet Trae IsAAc, a Detroit-based visual artist and muralist whose work is rooted in color, community, and purpose. Known for his bold colors, intricate linework, floral elements, and stained-glass-inspired compositions, Trae uses his art to connect communities while making creativity accessible to people of all ages.

Meet Leah Thompson, the creative behind Drawing Detroit | Architectural Artist! 🏙️🖍️ Leah’s work celebrates the places, landmarks, and everyday moments that make Detroit special, using art as a way to slow down, look closer, and connect more deeply with the city around us.

💭 Why is art important to community wellness?

“I believe art is important to community wellness because it creates connection. It gives us a chance to slow down, express ourselves, and see the places and people around us in a new way. Art can help us feel more connected to where we live by celebrating the stories, landmarks, and everyday moments that make a community unique.

For me, Drawn to Detroit grew from that idea. Creating art became a way for me to slow down and connect more deeply with my own city, and I hope my work encourages others to pause, appreciate the beauty around them, and feel a little more connected to Detroit and to one another.”

🎨🖍️ WAIT… WE HAVE ONE MORE COLORFUL SURPRISE! 🖍️🎨

We thought our National Coloring Day artist lineup was complete—but we had to make room for one very SPECIAL GUEST ARTIST! 🌈🙌🏾

And this one is a little personal for me.

I’m incredibly excited to welcome Dave Chow, Detroit illustrator, longtime College for Creative Studies professor and—plot twist—one of MY former illustration professors! 😂🎨

✏️🚗🎬 DAVE CHOW | SPECIAL GUEST ARTIST

From Detroit’s cars and music to Super Bowl commercials, television, comics, and classrooms, Dave has built an illustration career that has gone just about everywhere!

As an independent freelance illustrator, Dave has created artwork for major automotive manufacturers, more than 15 Super Bowl commercials, music videos, movie pitches, and entertainment projects. In recent years, you may have even spotted him on The Dead Files, where he regularly appeared as a sketch artist. 👀✏️

But Dave hasn’t just made art—he’s helped make artists.

For 17 years, he taught Illustration at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies, sharing his professional experience and his love of pop culture, MAD Magazine, Saturday morning cartoons, Disney, comic strips, and comic books with the next generation of creatives.

And I happen to be one of them. 💚

There is something incredibly full-circle about welcoming one of my former professors as a Special Guest Artist to an event created by The Coloring Museum. Years ago, I was sitting in a CCS classroom learning from Dave. Now we’re coming together to encourage another generation to pick up a pencil, marker, paintbrush—or CRAYON—and CREATE. 🖍️✨

🇬🇷🌈 OPA! Greektown got a little more COLORFUL! 🎨🖍️

The rain may have come down on Monroe Street, but it couldn’t wash away the COLOR! 🌧️🌈 Instead, The Coloring Museum brought the rainbow to Greektown—and the coloring fun kept going! 😆🖍️

Our Greektown Coloring Wall became a colorful meeting place for people from near, far…and VERY far. 🌎💙

One of my favorite moments was meeting a family with roots in Brazil and Poland who are traveling across America with their children. 🇧🇷🇵🇱🇺🇸 They stopped to color with us and shared that the experience became one of the highlights of their time in Detroit. 🥹🎨 How amazing is that?!

Then there was a college student who stopped to add some color to the wall. As he colored, he shared that it reminded him of his mother, who loved coloring and believed in its therapeutic power. 💛

And THAT is why we color.

Sometimes it’s simply fun.
Sometimes it becomes a memory.
Sometimes it connects us to home, family, or someone we love.
And sometimes a box of crayons brings complete strangers together underneath a rainy Detroit sky. 🌧️🖍️🌈

From Brazil 🇧🇷 to Poland 🇵🇱 to Detroit 🇺🇸, we were all CONNECTED BY COLOR in Greektown! 🇬🇷
