Next Thursday at 6:30 PM! Let’s talk about the cultural impact of Akira Toriyama’s DRAGON BALL and its transnational intersections! We’re welcoming back Vincent Haddad, who previously wrote THE DETROIT GENRE, a critical look at how film depicts our city. We’ll see you in the shop!

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In Next Time on Dragon Ball, Vincent Haddad investigates how the franchise has maintained huge global demand despite its formulaic plotlines. Haddad conceives of Dragon Ball as a “franchise toy,” a corporate media property that is constantly remixed by its fans in ways that its owners resist but also ultimately embrace: appropriation is essential to the franchise’s popularity. Over the past forty years, Haddad argues, Dragon Ball’s deployment of familiar tropes, cultural references, and narrative forms […] has invited unique transcultural play. Through diverse examples of how fans use its characters as “playthings,” Haddad shows how Dragon Ball travels across international networked fandoms, highlighting the q***r, gendered, and racialized dimensions of this play. Parsing the dynamics of “sites of conflict” between authorized media and fan content, Next Time on Dragon Ball illuminates how fan engagement across the Americas changes the parameters of what a manga and anime franchise is and can be.

In the spirit of Black August we answer the call from Jailhouse Lawyers Speak with a Prison Letter Writing event honoring the legacy of revolutionaries, political prisoners and freedom fighters who dedicated their lives to the struggle for Black liberation.

Our 10 Point Platform demands the release of all Black people held in prisons, jails, detention centers and other forms of captivity rooted in oppression. We recognize that justice and genuine rehabilitation cannot come from institutions built on settler colonialism, racial capitalism and state violence. We reject systems that criminalize, cage and kidnap our people and instead fight to build people led power, community care, transformative justice and collective defense rooted in self determination.

Join us in writing letters of solidarity to our incarcerated comrades. Let them know they are not forgotten and that the struggle for liberation continues on both sides of the prison walls.
