A cozy, bookstore-style space where stories hatch and imaginations soar.

Every book is free, thanks to Birdie's Bookmobile At Birdie’s Book Nest, families and educators can browse thousands of children’s books in a cozy, bookstore-style space designed to spark a love of reading. Every book is free to take home and keep — helping us carry out Birdie’s Bookmobile’s mission; a Detroit-based nonprofit working to close literacy gaps by increasing access to high-quality book

s, building home and classroom libraries, and inspiring lifelong readers across Detroit. Together, these programs have distributed nearly a quarter of a million books to children and families across Detroit. This includes 36,000 books purchased and donated to Detroit Public Schools Community District, ensuring every child has the chance to read, learn, and dream. Proudly nested within the Birdie’s family of companies — Birdie’s Bookmobile, Birdie’s Book Nest, Nesting Birds Education, and Nesting Birds Publishing.

Sorting books in our chilly warehouse comes with surprises! While we were bundled and boxing last night, one of our volunteers lit up when she spotted this book about Liberace. Proof that even in a maze of boxes, the right book has a way of finding you.

Grateful for the folks who show up, sift through thousands of books, and help us get stories into children’s hands. 💛

Book fairs bring out the best surprises. This reader picked up Ten True Animal Rescues by Jeanne Betancourt, a book published in 1998, and did not want to put it down.

Stories do not have to be new to be loved. Some of the older books in our bins and on our shelves are still page turners that kids connect with right away.

This is part of our story too. Our community keeps books moving, from one home to another and into the hands of new readers who are excited to discover them. If you have gently used children’s books at home, we would love to give them a second life in a child’s hands.
