We truly couldn't do it without the man, the myth, the legend... GARRY!!! 😊 If you know him, you know he is one of the nicest and coolest guys around. As we head into the holiday weekend, we would like to remind our residents, summer workers, and visitors to practice good safety habits while enjoying our beautiful Town of Dewey Beach, Delaware, this Labor Day weekend.

Please enjoy all we have to offer, but please utilize our crosswalks and embrace the slower, lower attitude of Delaware beaches!

Slow down and enjoy!

Essential Walking Safety Tips:

-Use sidewalks whenever available; if not, walk facing traffic and stay as far from vehicles as possible.

-Cross at crosswalks or intersections.

-Activate the yellow beacon to warn drivers to slow and yield to pedestrians crossing.

-Look left‑right‑left before crossing and continue scanning while crossing.

-Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before stepping into the road.

-Stay alert—avoid using phones or wearing earbuds while walking.

-Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night or in low‑visibility conditions.

Safety Tips for Drivers (to Protect Pedestrians):

-Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk.

-Slow down, especially in residential areas.

-Stay alert and avoid distractions such as texting.

-Use extra caution at night, in bad weather, or when visibility is limited.

-Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Why Pedestrian Safety Matters:

-More than 7,000 pedestrians are killed each year in U.S. traffic crashes.

-Most fatal crashes occur at night or in low‑visibility conditions and often outside intersections.

-Pedestrians lack physical protection, making collisions especially dangerous.

Join Surfrider Delaware + Surf Bagel Bagel for a morning of giving back to our coast as part of the 2026 Delaware Coastal Cleanup!

📍 Gordon’s Pond

We’ll be helping remove trash and debris before it makes its way into our waterways and ocean. And Surf Bagel will be providing bagels for our volunteers! 🥯

Beach cleanups do more than make our beaches look better. The debris we collect provides valuable data that helps Surfrider identify sources of pollution, advocate for better policies and work to reduce waste at the source.

Bring your family, friends or come on your own. Spend a couple of hours with your toes in the sand, meet some great people and help protect Delaware’s coast. 🌊💙
